job cancelled ..... removing bottom rad hose is not a option i can do :(

I've never done all that when I do a stat. I always make sure I work the water through the pipes well before I run it up to shift any air about but then perhaps I have just been lucky.

work the water ?..... please expand

sorry to be a pain , but this is quite a big episode for me , actually being able to do some repairs to my car..... so i dont need to take the bottom rad hose off then ? :nenau.....

im guessing that when i take the top off the stat housing , im gonna get covered in coolant

I will be doing mine tonight briggie replacing with an 88 degree job i wont be removing bottom rad hose if i dont have to just old out and new in i have never had an airlock in any other cars that i have done so gonna do the same with this one and hope for the best :thumb2

we will be able to compare notes then ( and swear words :augie )

Might be a bit but you wont be covered just make sure the coolants not hot leave it for half an hour or so if the cars been driven.

To change the stat :

With a cold engine :
Take the expansion tank cap off,
Take the rad cap off, Undo the three bolts that hold the top of the thermostat housing on (one is much longer than the other two)
Lift the top of the housing off,
Remove the thermostat
Compare it to the new one - does it look the same ? Do the holes line up, is it the same shape and size ?
If yes clean all the old gasket off both sides of the housing, try not to let any fall in the hole.
Put the new gasket in.
Put the new stat in.
Put the housing back on.
Put the bolts in.
Do the bolts up.
Top the radiator up with 50/50 antifreeze and water.
Give the bottom hose a few squeezes to push any trapped air out.
Top the rad up again if it needs it.
Refit the rad cap and expansion tank cap.
Run the car with the heater right up and blowers on full blast until you get HOT air.
Let it cool down.
Remove the rad cap
Top up if necessary.

BUT THIS WILL NOT STOP THE WATER LEAK !!!!!!!!!!! So back to what I said before. My heater goes a bit colder when the coolant is low. There's probably no need to change your stat at all, if your heater is ok when there's plenty of coolant going round the system, just find the leak !!

just going to b+q to buy a cheapo chisel ..... watch this space lol

success !!!! ( i think )

ok ive done it , only cut myself with the chisel twice , the gasket wasnt the right shape so i had to " modify it " ... then apply a bit of tetraseal instant gasket all around the surfaces ..... put it all back together and topped up coolant .... took about 2 litres and a lovely gurgling sound from the rad .... run the car till it got hot and took it for a run on the motorway ..... fuffing hell its hot :naughty ... had to open the windows :lol ... no leaks i can see , but the temp guage is a lot higher than it used to be ( is that normal ? ) ... instead of just about sitting on minimum its now around halfway .

do i get a medal ? :naughty

well done :thumb2

i think half way up is about right :thumbs

well done pete mine after a new stat only went to 1/4 never ventured up to half

just under half way up on the motorway, bit lower round town. seems right. How's your coolant level now ?

i checked about a hour ago , the coolant is above the rad fins so ok .... the temp guage sits about half way , rising to 3 quarters when i hammer it . but it soon returns to about half way ..... the heater is lovely and hot .... just gotta sort out the noisy blower now lol
