ive just looked at the old stat .... there doesnt appear to be anything wrong with it ... just a little bit of black gunge at the top , but that fell out when i pressed the spring thingie a few times

the black gunge might have been the blockage perhaps, im not sure if it was the wax (if it was a wax thermostat?), but well done Pete, really chuffed you did the job. I also had to modify my gasket, if you noticed, there were several holes and certain ones were in the correct place, i just popped them, then got a pen, marked around the house on the gasket, and cut to shape, job done. Id say half way on the temp gauge is correct for most cars. My Maverick runs just below half way, sometimes goes to half way on a fast run, never above.

Id say you need to run the car now for a few days to get the system fully circulated, air bubbles cleared that sort of thing, so dont worry too much if you have to top up a small amount.

You could clean it and use a thermometer and a kettle of hot water and an old bean tin and watch the thermometer to see when the thermostat opens.

Part fill the can with hot water say at 50c then add boiling water until it starts to open. Keep the water well stirred and monitor the temperature when fully open.

Watch the stat close when cooling and note the temperature again.

Temperature should be around 78-85 c at a guess.

This process saves you having to use a good saucepan.

Well thats my stat changed peice of cake, let it run on the drive for ten mins at 2500 rpm (i love the hand throttle) the temp gauge rose to half way it never used to do that unless driving up a big hill also had hot air coming through the vents :thumb2 lovely job!Took it out for a thrash and the needle stayed at half way .

So arived back at the garage and thought id do some other wee bits, removed power steering pump and cleaned the mini filter, blocked off the EGR valve lubed the door locks adjusted the drivers door latch as it wasnt shutting quite right and cleaned the air filter and checked all the fluid levels,im well happy with my few hours spent pampering the old beast :D

well done mate have not been following all the post but guess you changed your stat, just keep an eye on the levels OK no leaks but top up every so often?, I do not want to think about it, neither do you, Rick
