You're going to have to excuse the technical jargon in this post.

Does the bit of the engine that the thermostat housing bolts to, unbolt from the engine ? After a little more sniffing about, it appears that my water leak / weep is coming from this area. It doesn't appear to be the water pump or thermostat housing gasket.

Was it the part that goes over the thermostat, or the seal under the piece it sits in ?

i believe it was the housing the bit that goes over the thermostat
with 3 10mm bolts holding it on

had a hair line crack in it.
not noticeable but it was weeping

Undo the radiator, heater hoses (use a container to catch the coolant) and then undo the 3 bolts holding down the housing.
Be careful not to spill the coolant over paint work.

Once the 3 bolts have been removed give the thermostat housing a twist sideways to free it from the gasket and the main housing, this should allow the top half to come away.

Clean the old gasket away making sure not to damage the housing when using a sharp instrument to remove the old gasket. Sometimes a solvent is enough to remove the gasket.

Once clean, check the housing for any gouges /damage to the housings that might let the water seep under the gasket.
Place the "new gasket" back on and tighten up the bolts.
Torque settings are 16-21 (1.6-2.1, 12-15) = :N-m (kg-m,ft-lbs)

After installation, run engine for a few minutes, and check for leaks.
The heat of running makes the gasket set.

Try and not use a sealant unless you really have to e.g gouged the housing etc..
