During a laning coast to coast trip I've managed to break the terrano big time:eek:

Gone in three places so a full chassis inspection is in order before I decide the fate of the old thing:confused:

Not familiar with the Terrano, but is this just behind the rear axle?

That will be an interesting repair if the rest of the chassis is good enough.

It's gone on both sides just behind the rear spring mounts and also on the drivers side just below the lower trailing arm.
The two rear most breaks are a simple fix but the other has me a bit concerned about the rest of the chassis.
A good clean up and inspection is happening tomorrow so i can make a decision on how to proceed :thumb2

Behind the spring mounts seems to be a weak spot for both the Terrano and the Patrol. I wonder if it is due to the rear wheels throwing up water and mud that finds its way into the chassis.

Hopefully the rest of the chassis is in reasonable condition. At least you can make some repair pieces at work.

That was my thinking.
If the rest of the chassis is good then i think i will fabricate a couple of new rear chassis legs from box section :thumb2

Having seen your previous work, I am sure that it will be to a very high standard. :clap

Looking forward to seeing it in the project section. :thumbs

wow, thats impressive, what was the situation??

was it down to metal fatigue you reckon??

Cheers

Elty is better placed to answer this Weedave, but by the looks of it is the tin worm.

On the second photo is looks like the chassis snapped next to a weld. Personally I find the welding on the chassis (ex factory) is pretty poor with not many nice, smooth welds. Perfect places for undesirables to get stuck and start attacking the metal.

On my Patrol, the chassis looked absolutely fine from the outside but at some places (predominately behind the rear axle) you could just stick your finger through the “solid” metal. They seem to corrode from the inside out, which makes spotting it even more difficult.

I changed the chassis and treat it with Dinitrol every year (inside and out) and the inside is still corroding.

ah ok cool, gives me food for thought, my mates just bought one of those dinky wee cameras on the end of a flexi (cheap on off amazon) that would work a treat inside the chassis rails.

Lanolin and cavity wax mine twice a year.

your right about the factory welding - look a bit like mine:eek:

Cheers

Just a case of the old tin worm.
Got the truck up on axle stands yesterday, stripped off the rear suspension and made a start checking the damage.
Gave the chassis a good going over with a hammer and chisel, concentrating on the higher stress areas and for the most part all seems good and strong.
Made a start on cleaning up around the damaged areas so i can get some repair sections made up.
