Terrano Van Tax and Insurance

I know Banshee has a van but anyone else as well please. Can you tell me how much the road tax and insurance is compared to a ordinary car terrano.

I've looked at DVLA website but the tax is either same as a car or it's only £140 for a commercial. Does it make any difference that I'm not a business user as such. I need my car insurance to cover business use for work but it's only the basic cover and doesn't make any difference to the current insurance policies that I have.

Hi Jim, for the standard truck, the road tax will depend on when the truck was first registered, it took quite a hike after a particular year.
So first of all, when was the truck first registered, ie month and year?

Cant't you just put the details into DVLA tax site ?

This link should help just go to the page that covers the date of first registration for later vehicles you will need to know the emissions that are on the V5 document.

Vehicle registered after March 2006 are where the big increase happens for 4x4. Post March 2006 are over £500 !

My T2 V5 says 262 G/Km under the emissions section......

But these new taxation costs only applied to new cars, so I am making a huge assumption (not a normal habit of mine!) that our older cars will continue with the older levels of taxation and as mine is 2002 model, I will when I bring it back and reregister it pay the old band of £200 ish/something.......???

If you open the DVLA link I posted it starts with new cars then just keep on going onto the next page until you reach the date for your particular vehicle you will see the rates for Pre March 2001 etc link for pages below. No assumption made as the reduced and increased rates were not retrospective it's all based on first registration table and later ones vary with emissions. It's confusing because your V5 will still show emissions even though they were not used in the UK on older vehicles.

Look at the V5 for the taxation class our Jeep Grand Cherokee Estate is taxation class "Diesel Car" the emissions are 255 G/KM first registered on 29-01-2005.

I have just taxed it for 12 months and it cost £295.00

It does not attract the higher rates over £500 as it fits section *K as it was registered before 23 rd March 2006 you are not charged at the higher emission rate !

The reason was that after 23 rd March 2006 Budget the Government introduced higher VEL duty rates for the dirty Diesel and Petrol cars.

It led to the situation where a V6 Diesel Grand Cherokee 3 litre was taxed at £295 if it was registered new before the 23 rd March 2006 an identical vehicle first registered the very next day on 23 rd March 2006 with the same emissions was taxed at £515.00

That's one of the reasons that pre 23 rd March 2006 Diesel 4 x4 s hold their value as they are cheaper to tax than identical newer models.

I am not aware of any VEL duty Taxation Class Band called "commercial vehicles" except for Car Tax exemption when new and VAT application when used and sold by a trader. If anyone knows different I am ready to learn if they can post the link.

A Terrano Van would be well under 3500 Kg revenue rate so will either be classed as a TC 39 Light Goods Vehicle or a TC 36 Euro 4 or 5 Light Goods Vehicle. One is rated at £230 a year and the other at £140 depending on age. Prior to March 2001 I would think they were under the old classification of PLG. Private light goods - this would appear on the V5 document as the Taxation Class.

It might be useful if someone posted the taxation class and date of first registration of their van and what they pay. Either way it is unlikely to be a £525 plus annual VEL.

That's the one - Private Light Goods. Doubt the Terrano van is Euro 4 compliant though :nenau
