I've checked the Maf and it is a Bosch part so cleaning might not be an option. Before replacing it I'd like to clean this mini filter. Rick when you say it's in the banjo bolt , do you mean where the fuel return is connected to the fuel filter attachment? The primer pump on the top is hard to push and doesn't move much at all.

John, check the club down load section, it shows you how to do it mate under this heading ...Cleaning the fuel pump mini filter (Nissan Mistral 2.7TD)

and unbolt the power steering pump and move it out of the way to get good access to the banjo bolt n mini filter

Yep found the download thanks very much. I'll clean the filter tomorrow and see what difference that makes before I splash out on a replacement maf.

There are lots of helpful downloads to help us save money, hope that is your problem and it sorts it out.

So eventually found half an hour spare to clean the mini filter. The one on my vehicle was not quite like in the how to guide, in that it seemed to me to be enclosed in the bolt itself. This made removing it easy as there was no need to hook it out, however cleaning it was less easy. I gave it a good rinse in in petrol (the whole bolt became clean so I hoped the same would be happening to the filter inside) then I finally gave it a rinse in white spirit.

Anyway reassembled and went out for a test, much better performance revved more cleanly and had more power, at this point I was optimistic so went in search of a good hill. Revved up to about 3500k in third and the safe mode kicked in!

So I'm I looking at a new MAF then? seems like I can get a Bosch one off ebay for about £50.00 Ill check out the cab star one Richbids mentioned as that might save a few quid.

just bin the mini filter clearly your starting to win my banjo bolt and mini filter is on the front of the pump. you will need a genuine maf bosch if its gonna work properly

and just out of interest how far from the euro tunnel are you as i pop over a lot on my bike

Just before you do your maf mine did exactly the same as yours last night self inflicted as I pulled into the m3 I booted it got to about 50 then it all died and gradually slowed down to a crawl upon restarting it did the same when I hit 40-50 booting it I crawled along the hard shoulder stopping and starting until I got to a safe place by a bridge prior to the journey I had replaced my diesel leak off pipes with the inter cooler off when I pulled over I had a look and I had left the jubilee clip on the boost pipe loose ( couldn't really hear a boost leak and turbo had effort as pipe was in place) but the leak must have been enough for the maf to pick up and put into safe mode. Tightened the jubilee Clip and away I went perfect after that. Take a good look at all your boost pipes for cracks leaks and tightness of clips you never know it could be that easy ???

 i dont want this, my leak off pipes are chucking out veg at the moment.

Easily avoided by tightening everything that you have previously loosened you would imagine common sense but I must be short on that count.

Good tip on the boost pipes I'll check today, a mate a work also described a similar problem that was caused by a split turbo pipe on his focus.

As for distance from the euro tunnel it's a fair old trek I'd think about 6or7 hours, might be quicker on a bike though, but not the nicest of rides. Busy motorways from one corner of England to the other.

Could be fuel filter/housing.

Id ruled the filter out as it did it with the previous filer and with this one but the housing could be worth a try. Is there anything in particular that I should look for?
