Terrano tdi engine power dies at higher revs. Any ideas???

Hello folks,
I thought I try posting on here to see if anyone could help find a solution to my Terrano engine problem. When the engine is used at higher revs i.e. long steep hills, or its happened once whilst overtaking with a trailer on the engine looses all of its power.

It doesn't stall but the accelerator has no response if pressed further, the car will either just maintain its current speed or starts to slow down very progressively, and still whilst this is happening the accelerator has no effect if pressed. The only way to correct the problem is to pull over, turn the ignition off and re start the engine. This seems to clear the fault and the car will drive as normal afterward, providing you don't ask too much of the engine again.

I'd be keen to hear any thoughts or suggestions you might have as to what might be causing it to do this as there are obviously safety implications so the sooner I can sort it the better. I've recently changed the air filter and have changed the fuel filter in the past but the problem was present prior to this.

As always any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

have you cleaned the maf?. any mil light fault codes is the primer on the pump hard or down? all things to check

Thanks very much for the rapid reply. I'm not sure what a maf is or where to find it? and there is no engine management light displayed if that's what you mean by a mil light? I can check the primer on the pump tomorrow. Apologies for my basic technical knowledge, there's a lot to learn!

this is for illistration only but you will get the idea of what to look for its attached the the air filter box one end and a large rubber connector, engine side on the other and has a wired connector going into it

only use contact cleaner say from maplins give it a spray and let it dry out do not use anything else also mite be worth checking the mini filter

What you describe is the ECU going into failsafe mode... Not sure why they call it that, as all it means is you just get slower and slower...

Does it do it after a bump or anything like that?

Basically, as already said, the MAF causes it, but it could be a dodgy lead or connector on the MAF as well

Mine does it when I switch the MAF Amp (an addition) on or off while the car is running (I don't do it anymore), which momentarily caused a brief disconnection of the MAF output, and as you say, you have to pull over, switch off, and then re-start, and then everything is fine again. Also I do not get any warning lights on the dash either.

I have read in the past, that the connector, where it plugs into the MAF can corrode, so be careful when you disconnect it, but that may be where the problem lies.

If you have one, could also be the mini fuel filter, mine lost power (dramatically so) when it was blocked. After cleaning it for the third time in 12 months I never bothered to refit it.

Right then sound like this MAF thing is well worth a try, I've just ordered some contact cleaner off ebay, I'll have a look at the connections while I'm there. There's a bloke up the road breaking a terrano so if the maf connections look damaged I might be able to get a second hand replacement.

i've just fitted a new maf to my Terrano, when cold it was noticably slower than when hot but still when hot it would struggle on a hill, taking a few down changes to pull me up them and accelerating to motorway speeds, the new maf from GSF cost £28 + vat (i get some discount with them) there is a surcharge for the old unit but with those prices it's not worth trying a second hand one and i have plenty of power now

These symptoms have been flagged up on here before. My first instinct i thought fuel filter or maf.

Hope you get it sorted. Doesn't sound like anything major though.

where are you buying this maf from at that price and is it a bosch one ?

GSF car parts, online is £115+vat if you have a local store call in see what they can do as i said i get discount there but i'm sure they can have some flexability and it is bosch. if you know anyone in the motor trade they should get discount

If it is a Bosch Maff do not try and clean it, you cannot, it is self cleaning and anything you try and do will only make it worse, Hitachi is different, and can be cleaned with care, Rick

I can vouch that Bosch cannot be cleaned,i have tried.Ended up replacing it.Bought a after market replacement.It went duff after three days.So replaced with a genuine one.Swapped old Bosch for a new one.Paid the cash difference.
I don't remember exactly how much i paid.But it was less than £60.00.Happy days since.:thumbs

hi guys i had a maf problem and the bosch maf from euro car parts was silly money . had a look at the bosch part number on the maf and narrowed it down to a maf form 2.2 vauxhall and a nissan cab star 2.7 litre . i went for the cabstar maf as its the same engine as the 2.7 t2 and it fitted and worked ok .the cab star maf cost me £ 29.99 on ebay. hope this is some help .:thumb2

I've checked the Maf and it is a Bosch part so cleaning might not be an option. Before replacing it I'd like to clean this mini filter. Rick when you say it's in the banjo bolt , do you mean where the fuel return is connected to the fuel filter attachment? The primer pump on the top is hard to push and doesn't move much at all.
