Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to help with the following problems with my 1999 , 2.7 tdi.
Last March / April the truck refused to start one morning, engine turned over ok but it would not fire. I checked the glow plugs and the supply to them , all good. I then flattened the battery trying to start it. This was the situation for more than a week, then I decided to check for fuel delivery. I removed the union nut to number 4 cylinder injector. I got the wife to sit in the car while I watched for fuel out of the disconnected pipe. After about 2 seconds on the starter motor the engine started. Naturally I was pleased that it started but I was also surprised because :
1 -- It was a cold day.
2 -- I had forgotten to reconnect the glow plugs.
3 -- Only 3 cylinders were receiving fuel.
Since then the problem has reoccurred every few weeks and is getting worse.
It can happen with the engine cold, warm or hot. I believe it to be an air lock.
Any suggestions to remedy this fault will be gratefully received.

check the fuel system for leaks, anywhere that air could be getting in, have you changed the filter recently?

terrano starting problems

The fuel filter that is on the car has done about 6k. I think I will change it though.
Has anyone experienced air getting into the system via the filter housing ?

I think I read a forum somewhere on here about the return pipes letting air in. The fuel return pipes that connect between the injectors taking unused fuel back to the tank.
Might be worth checking old forums.
Matt.

Have you considered this?

check for a sticky fuel shutoff solonoid, I've had this problem before albeit on an lpg system, totally baffling until I found the cause. When it happens again, turn the ignition on, the fuel pump will whirr away and you should feel a click on the solonoid, if you don't give it a gentle tap with the head of a screwdriver or similar..........that should make it open up.
The fix then is simple, strip the solonoid down and rotate the bar, it'll be a flat spot created by wear.

Hi There, Where did your filter come from?, As a while ago several members using new filters from a certain supplier had problems with the rubber seal, Just an idea. Wrong "o rings".
