Hi all, can anyone advise please?

My terrano seems to be getting really quite hot and i arent sure why.
I have even tried removing the thermostat and that hasnt really helped.

It usually runs quite cool on the temp gauge but it nearly hit the red the other day....and it is concerning me a little, i certainly dont want to cook the head.

So what can i check or do to investigate this problem further?

Any help would be much appreciated

how hot is hot? what's the temp needle showing?

OK first thing never remove the thermostat and run the engine under load the flow rate round the engine carefully calculated around a fully open stat, remove it and the flow rate can be too high causing localised cavitation within the rough parts of the head and block, cavitation means no water in contact at that point can lead to cracked heads and localised boiling causing ball bearing shaped indentations in the cast which can grow in size over a period and weaken the head/block further.

So first item to check is the viscous fan when it gets hot it should be roaring audibly, Rick

oh...thanks for that rick didnt know that....i shall put it back tomorrow...

The fan is spinning but i cant say i have heard it roaring.....what does that mean and how do i either check its working properly or fix it?

the obvious question ( to me anyway ) is ... is it using any water ?:nenau

nope...not using any water, no obvious signs of anything in the water either....

Yes it is not well known, just test the stat in a pan of water on the gas it should be full open short of boiling, re the fan when you start in the morning it should roar for a minute or two, and it should do the same when the needle starts to rise above normal, if it does not roar in the morning replace it pronto, if it roars in the morning but not when getting too hot then check the bi metal coil spring on the front for detachment at the centre or the fixed end if it looks OK then internal fault so replace it, I think on the 2.7 it is part of the water pump, Rick

okay cheers rick i will listen to it in the morning and report back

Just another thing to check, is it definitely getting too hot, or is it just the gauge showing it is hot? If the temp sender is faulty, or the wire is shorting to earth, it will read hot. The wire on the sender does seem to snap off easily.

usually the normal operating temp seems to be about 1/3 up from the bottom, but lately it sits generally half way up drifting slowly up towards the red area...which obviously scares me....

Open k&n in the engine bay will suck hot air . Go up a hill and the engine will struggle and get even hotter , vicious circle !! Putting it in an air box will allow colder air to be directed to the filter. Happened with mine , only time the car has ever overheated was with the k&n open , never done it again after fitting it back in the box.

quick update....

this morning i replaced the thermostat and tested on a short drive, still the same.
I also put my K&N filter inside my original air box, it did initially seem to make a small difference but i took it for a short run on the motorway and the temp quickly climbed again....

I would also like to point out that the truck is not anywhere near as responsive with the original air box back on....

I have to say i did forget to listen to the fan this morning to see if it roars or not, i will try and remember tomorrow...

If using in side standard air box u need to bin that silly small pipe that goes from in side wing to air box seal that hole up and cut a 3" round hole in the airbox and get some 3" pipe to the head light area or a snorkel if going through deep water that will get the omph back as to ur over heating could be a vane or two fallen off the water pump in side has been known not on terranos but thats not to say it could good luck finding the fault on a side note I now have really cold aircon:D so cold I had to open the window :lol

okay guys a quick update....

on the note of the "roar" from the fan that Rick mentioned, i popped the bonnet this morning before starting from cold and i have to say i didnt hear any kind of roar or even any noise from the viscous fan....

So whats the plan now?

Then that will be your problem, if it did not ROAR then it has probably lost its viscous fluid, so will never work again, replace it, on the petrol it separates from the water pump but I hear that on the 2.7 it is part of the pump, I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, Rick

Hi Rick thanks for the reply.

So i take it it is not repairable, just replaceable....so where do i get one or are you saying its part of the water pump?

You are once again right Rick....i have looked at the manual and it appears that the water pump, pulley and coupling are all one and one of the things it says to check for is signs of oil leakage from the coupling.

So if its the pump/ coupling is it an easy job to undertake and what should i expect to pay for a pump?
