Hi, new member here and hoping you guys could give me a little advice. I've ran terrano's now for many years and converted them to run wvo on a two tank systems, I normally get a good run off them before I need to replace due to rust or engine failures. Anyway I purchased another about 2 years ago which only had 56k on the clock which at the time I thought it was a bargain and I would just store it until I needed it. When I picked it up it did lack power and had a bit of a whine (from turbo fairly sure) but would just work on it in my own time. Now running it I have noticed a oil leak from the crank seal clutch area also the intercooler has oil residue in it and there seams to be excessive blowby enough that it spits oil out when cap is removed, it starts off the key instantly with no misfires and there is no excessive smoke from the exhaust. I've removed the turbo and im about to order a new chra, but before I do has anyone come across this before I'm slightly concerned that it's a more serious engine issue than a turbo issue due to the excessive blowby / oil leak and power loss as the turbo looks in fairly good nick there is not a massive amount of play (although some) is there anything else I should be looking for before spending money replacing the cartridge without doing compression test? Also is turborail any good for a chra other than ordering a Chinese one, also maf sensor is bad any modifications or just replacement for this part? Would appreciate any help :)

Oh and forgot to say it's a 2001 2.7tdi......

Before spending money on the turbo I would be doing a compression test, as for the maf is it a Bosch or Zexell pump? Rick

Hi Rick, to be honest I thought they where all bosch pumps on the terranos. How can I tell what pump it is? I am more electrical than mechanical so don't laugh at me for the following lol but I was wondering if I clean and check breather pipes from rocker cover etc then run the motor without the turbo on and see if that causes the same blowby as with the turbo on, put a bag or something over turbo oil feed pipe to catch oil (check oil feed to turbo at the same time) would this be possible? Just thinking outside the box as I will need to try and borrow some compression testing gear. Cheers Rich

Also maf is a five pin one engine runs fine without it connected but will not rev beyond idle with it connected....

Sounds like you have the Bosch set up, can be confirmed by the large round connector to the pump harness, Zexell has smaller oblong connectors this Maf cannot be cleaned and should be replaced, not cheap, re running without the turbo what do you want to achieve? turbo cannot influence crank case pressure, Rick

Ah OK will find some compression kit cheers, my train of thought was that if the turbo was bad (with the whining noises) letting in exhaust gasses into the crank case probably wishful thinking!

Just ordered a tester off ebay didn't realise how cheap this kit is I was expecting £100+ will let you know results cheers for your help.

There is a couple on ebay but they don't match my part no. but say they are for the 2.7tdi I gave it a clean with carb cleaner but not much joy slightly better but still faulty. I'm kicking myself a bit as I have scrapped a few terranos in last ten years and never removed many parts off them some more mechanically sound than this one if I think back I could have had 3 spare turbos lol

I've cleaned my MAF before now, I use alcohol or meths on ear buds .... but make sure there are no fibres left on the MAF heater element.
I've also used cheap one's off fleabay with success.

There is a workshop note on here somewhere to tell you the voltages expected at the cables ( 5v 12v etc ) and that lets you confirm your MAF is getting signals from other inputs ( electronic accelerator & etc )

Its worth checking those things to confirm it is actually the MAF that is at fault.

Thanks I will look into that when I put the turbo on might have success with it as at the moment there is no air flow. I have done the compression test and the results are starting from bulk head- 520, 520, 520, 540, is this right for this engine, cheers

In fact just looked at the manual and 427psi is the standard figure, so would question the accuracy of the gauge, Rick

It was a cheap £20 one so might be inaccurate, could be a 100psi out maybe, at least the figures are all a like there is no massive difference with them so i think it's looking good but not looking forward to changing the crank seal if it still leaks!

It's the back one gearbox side, it looks like it could be the seal looks as if the leak is coming from between the gearbox and the engine (clutch area), although it's low mileage I don't think the last owners took that good care of it service wise, it did not come with any history as such

Unusual for that seal to go, if it is the rear crank seal you will only see oil inside the bell housing, if you have oil on the engine above the starter then it is more likely the rocker cover or oil cooler, Rick

Thanks Rick, I need to do more investigation once I rebuild the turbo, I'm hoping my issues are related to a bad turbo as there is a little play in it, I would assume that there was enough play to pass gasses from the exhaust to the oil (not sure if that's possible?) Before parking it up I was using wvo on a twin tank system for a few months, I am now wondering if the excessive compression is due to carbon build up in the cylinders (just what I have read on the net) but on both diesel and oil it still was not as powerful as other terranos that I have had from the day I collected it

I guess boost pressure could get into the oil return, never experienced that myself, guess the bearing would need to be completely shot for that to happen, I have just had the turbo on my Patrol refurbished, the compressor wheel was rubbing the casing but no noticeable blow by into the engine, carbon build up is an interesting thought re high compression values, only way to find that out would be lift the head, Rick

Don't fancy lifting the head unless I really have to Rick! Just a thought its on the logbook as a terrano sport would that just be the trim level or some jiggery pokery with the engine with more power / higher compression, I would have thought it would be just the trim level (this is the only terrano I've had with both sunroof and aircon). I'm going to block the egr off tomorrow just waiting on the chra to rebuild the turbo and hopefully with the maf cleaned or replaced the engine will be good, I can't think of anything else Rick that would effect the performance unless it's the pump but that looks like an awful job!

I await to hear the results of all your work, Sport is just trim, Rick
