hi, i have a problem with the 4wd on my 94 terrano II, when i engage 4wd the car is bloody awful to drive, it pulls me all over the road, also it won't coast & feels as if the brakes are on, also if i exceed 10 mph it is vibrating & humming badly from the front, it's fine in 2wd, could it be the auto hubs? can someone please help! its banging down with snow here ... lol

When you stuck it in 4wd were you on clear tarmac?
Only engage 4wd when on the loose stuff:augie
Read the sun visor, there should be destructions there:thumbs

was in snow earlier today, first time i've tried it this year, was fine last year, it's totally uncontrollable, something is definately wrong somewhere, :nenau

4H mate :thumbs it may sound stupid but it feels like everything is out of sync, as if the front wheels is fighting against the rears,

I spent 4 hours in the snow on Friday but there wasnt enough on the road to warrant 4wd. If you were driving on snow covered road then I'd expect 4wd high and low speeds anyway. If it's icy then things will be crazy anyway:lol

i have a fairly steep drive up to my house & i used 4h to try and get up in soft snow but it was pulling me towards the fence, something is definately wrong somewhere, its as if the front wheels are fighting with the rears, also if i try to turn right or left it feels to literally jump across the surface,

As its so different to last year maybe there is a problem.

Could just be under use , I think I'd try engageing and disengaging a few time to see if it frees up.

Apart from that haven't got a clue.

sorry

Brian

Right well is there much camber on the track, what tyres you got on?
It could be simply a bit too much beans:augie Front diff is open so could be scabbling for grip and when it finds it on one side or the other, it'll pull that way for a second.
Try it again in 4wd low and steady slow pace in say second or 3rd.
Have you got the right oil in the rear diff?

it's certainly not normal, if anyone is in the yorkshire area brave enough to have a go in it please let me know ... it's evil ... :D

It could also be steering issues like steering arm bushes. It could be front ball joints top or bottom.
Sounds like the hubs are doing their bit ok and there's another fault somewhere.
If you take a bit of weight off the front and wiggle the wheels up n down and side to side, see what gives. Best with a friend, or the wife will do failing that :lol

hi again, the tyres are bridgestone duallers 225/75/15, the same ones as what was on last year, there is no evidence of abnormal wear on the shoulders etc. also the rear diff oil is same as last year, checked the level last week & it is ok. all that has been done on the front end this year is the upper & lower balljoints for mot in october.

Duellers are pretty much a road tyre really. Was there much fresh snow on the track, if so a slow speed should be fine with those tryes though. If its more packed n icy then they're bound to be sliding about a bit.
Best to try it again on a less steep bit to see what happens.
The description of driving with the brakes on though is classic wind-up:augie
Pulling side to side is much like getting grip here n there and driving it too hard:rolleyes:
Good luck, I think I'm out of ideas now:augie

I know you say it's snowing but,is the snow thick?
Was it icy/slippy? otherwise.....It does sound normal ...thats the vehicle appearing to hop/jump.
Mine did when I first used 4 wheel drive {when I should not have} unless I was in thick snow/ice or mud/off road I just used 2 wheel drive. Everything you are saying appears to sound normal.
I am talking about a Terrano not what I own now.

id be seriously thinking, based on what you say, its the auto hubs. if its fine in 2wd, then it cant be steering or anything like that, has to be the hubs or somethign 4wd linked, id get those hubs off for a look, theres a download for this...

Had a similar problem when I first engaged 4 wheel drive. Had not used it before on investigation found out the only one hub was locking the other had chewed the spring.
May be worth checking that all four wheel are driving

the auto hubs must be working other wise their would be no difference in the way it drives going from 4wd to 2wd, i have had a auto hub fail.

it sound more like transmision wind up than anything else, but could be somthing bent on the drive shaft at the front or somthing that is loose

This info may not be the case with the original thread but may help other members using their 4 wheel drive for the first time in anger.
Sometimes if the hubs are not engaged or disengaged properly, the hubs may start clicking, so go through the routine, engage 4 wheel drive, drive 3 metres forward, go back to 2 wheel drive, reverse back say 3 metres, repeat if there is still a noise.

Preferably do this on a loose surface or while one side of the vehicle is on grass/gravel just in case wind up has jammed the hubs some how. :nenau

Played with my Mav this morning in the snow, power turns are great, go into 2 wheel drive turn the wheel on half lock and power it round, it will turn on it's own length. On private land of course.:thumb2 With help from the limited slip diff.
To prove your 4 wheel drive is working do the same in 4 wheel drive, but you will need more space....:thumbs
You won't need to ask if your 4 wheel drive is working. Make sure the snow is slippy enough, you don't want to wind up the transmission...., too much.
