hi towing my caravan up long steep incline on m62 temp gauge moved form centre to high but not to red wen on the level it went to centre is this normal caravan a lunar delta 640ew 1.400kg to 1.700kg my trucks a terrano 2 2.7tdi o4 reg manual cheers terrano bob:thumb2

Yes, mine does that on a long hill, goes from being about a third of the way up, to 2/3rds, then as soon as you summit, it starts to cool off again.

I would be suspecting the viscous fan, since fitting electric to mine never goes above half way even when towing slow on a very long hill on a very hot day with gross 4.5 tonnes, Rick

How long ago was this, mine was back in the summer, when I towed the new van back last Friday, in all that wind a rain, she never raised the tem at all. When the temp does go up, if you open the window and listen, you can really hear the fan working.

Quick way to get a feel for the fan is, does your car roar for a few mins after you first start it up. Not a fool proof way, but at least lets you know if it s kicking in.

Hoping to get a caravan in the next 6 months but will be fitting a manualy switched elec fan for hills to help save a bit on fuel as the viscus fan adds extra load on the engine which in my eyes you don't want going up hill towing

I wouldn't worry if you are only putting a caravan on the back... these T2 engines do not care what you stick on the back, they just drive the same... Only thing that tells you anything is on the back, is a slightly bouncier ride, and slower pull away from junctions...

I would have though the load on the alternator to run the fan would be a bit more than the viscous:confused: so more fuel:eek:

As I have said before, the fact the fan roars on start up does not in any way indicate the fan will come on when hot, all it means is the viscous fluid is still present and sunk to the bottom which drives the fan till it spins to the outside, it does not tell you whether the bimetallic spring on the front is working the valve that forces the fluid into the driving vanes when hot, and I have yet to find a reliable way of testing this, Rick

fan to cool will take around 5 bhp, no matter what method you drive it, but electric is much more accurate in determining when to switch on and of as it takes water temp readings on return to rad, whereas viscous is still running all the time but lower load, electric wins hands down, Rick

Hi Rick, does that mean the viscous is removed?
dave

yes my viscous is binned, after it let me down when towing up long hill in high summer towing my off road motor on the trailer, my winchbitch said she could hear some funny noises but too late almost seized engine, my hearing is shot temp gauge was just below the red so was not too concerned. cost me another engine, Rick

hi rick will put electric fan on is it a big job terrano bob x plasterer :thumbs

No as you can mount infront of the rad & air con if you have it. If just adding a fan then you just need a live fused supply, earth, fan & switch & it's easy to run the wires through the bulkhead drivers side

Sounds like the way to go, what size fan would be best
Where will the thermostat go, or is there one in place now.
