My recently aquired T2 has developed a whine noise which would appear to manifest it's self from the transfer box on the prop shaft. It is more noticeable when at speeds of 45mph=70mph. Have taken it back to the garage where it was bought from and they have checked all the oil levels associated with the gear box and transfer boxes along with checking that the prop shafts etc are in good order. The universal joints have been re-greased. but what I have noticed is that where the main prop shaft leaves the back of the gear box an amount of process fluid(grease/oil) has been flung out all over the underneath, I have been told that this maybe because the rear seal has gone. Has anybody got any idea's what is causing this and do I have cause for concern?. Any help in trying to rectify this problem would be greatly appreciated:confused:

There is a known problem with the main gearbox some of the bearings are only splash lubricated
This is usually the main input bearing (there is an upgrade input shaft and bearing availible for some models) and the rear main bearing. we have found that if the gearbox oil is always maintained at the correct level there isn't usually a problem some members have even overfilled the gearbox to improve the lubrication. The transfer boxes are usually very reliable as long as the oil has been kept at the right level.
Some owners manuals state that the correct oil for the transfer box is Auto transmission fluid ATF I think alot of us have replaced this oil with standard gearbox oil without any problems as we felt ATF was too thin

There is another very simple problem that it could be
under the gearstick gator is another rubber gator this rubber gator splits and it makes the gearbox sound noisy

Just remember that the noise can travel through the transmission and makes the faults hard to find I once repaired a terrano that had a noisy gearbox on overun and it turned out to be a Knackerd engine mount
