hi guys

another post im afraid here goes my terrano is a 97 lwb and im not sure if i have a prob or not
the truck feels like its holding back but no other detrimental symptoms ive checked the fuel for water no sign of it, checked the maf sensor and seems fine disconnected it and it drives like a dog so that counts that out, no smoke of any colour, starts 1st time every time without fail, no engine management lights stay on, glow plug light goes out after anything between 4-12 seconds, but when cruising at 35-45 mph the truck feels like its being held back

best way i can describe the feeling is like the handbrake is up a few clicks.

i was wondering if the mini filter may be blocked ( if i have one ?
how can tell if i have a mini filter or not ?

i wondered about checking to see if one of the calipers was sticking
but the wheels dont get hot
but hey its -3 degrees where i am

any advice would be good guys.

have you checked the easy stuff ? like air filter . fuel filter ?

Change the fuel filter and check the mini filter on the inlet to the fuel pump.

Check the mini filter on the inlet to the fuel pump.

:thumbs Thats the 1st thing to do when it comes to holding back through fuelling :thumbs

Easy test though is to start it & rev it up (once warm) & see what it revs upto ;)
If you put your foot to the floor & it doesnt go all the way to the red then I'd put money on it being the mini filter ;)

The mini filter should be under this banjo union as circled in RED if you have one and no one has took it out and lost it....the pump on this engine is a Zexel one.Pretty sure the Bosch one should be in roughly the same place as well. For fux sake remember not to get anything in the hole in the pump when you have taken the banjo union off.Keep everything clean..... clean.... clean.

Not 100% sure if all had them fitted but I would have thought it was a good idea too..........No harm in checking though.

Check the air filter. I had similar problem after instaling budget air filter. Now is K&N, pulls like a horse.

mini filter in mine, and i believe others, was for some odd reason in the return pipe, not the inlet, but yes in the banjo not the pump.
also, the disconecting MAF, just proves it is not completly gone, not that is failing.
trade test, drive up a hill3rd gear, does it feel at its very worse, slight miss, hesitating, even missing?
yes, then change the MAF for a new one, if Hitachi pump/MAF, then order a P11 Primera one, identical, except the price.
also have you looked in inlet to see if EGR has reduce your inlet to a small oily gunky mess?

.

thanks for the replys guys i replaced the air filter with a cheapy eurocarparts one and the fuel filter about 8 months ago but havent really used the truck since until the recent bad snow.

perhaps i should change the maf and check the mini filter

where is the egr valve on these engines ?

rear left of the engine, back of inlet manifold.
also check the throtle body on top of manifold, as this is designed to work in conjunction with EGR, so when more egr gas is flowing, clean air is throtled back by large butterfly flap.
If vacume pipe to egr has been blocked in the past, the butterfly (throtle body)will still be closing, when the engine thinks it is opening the egr, and will reduce power, as engine will lack air to combust, so may also black smoke more, both devices need disabling at the same time, either by removing vacume, ball bearing insert or whatever, or removing all.
I made two small steel plates to cover exhaust manifold egr hole and inlet manifold hole, removed butterfly valve and cleaned out inlet manifold and ports, got about 2lbs of oily gunk out, now perfomance and mpg has increased dramaticaly.
on last fill up, averaged 30mpg, brim to brim, and was not holding back with speed etc.
i have some pictures if people are intersted?

leafy1, im sure there is an easyer way to check the mini filter , that take the engin out..

Re the Primera; Any particular engine/model?

How yu getting on...............any news niks_terrano ii ???

hi guys just had too change the water pump grrrr !!

anyway had a look at the mini filter no sign of one in the the pump or in the banjo ?
removed the air filter ( can hear the turbo boosting and sounding fine)

havnet changed the fuel filter yet no sign of any water or muck when i drained the filter into a glass.

took intercooler off and cleaned it had a look at the egr valve but didnt remove it too check inside but i did notice what looks like oil splatterings on the bulkhead behind the egr valve, not sure if this related to my problem or not ? ?

can anyone show me any pics of how too remove egr valve and blank it off ?

also what is the butterfly that one side of the intercooler sits in ??
what does it do ? and finally if i was to remove the egr valve could i remove the butterfly ? the reason i ask is because it has a actuator to open it.

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

sorry for all the questions guys AGAIN lol

.

sorry forgot too mention performance is still a little flat and still feels underpowered even after all the checking ive been doing

Do you do much mileage in her or is it a weekend ride only? I've found over many years of running them that, like most diesels, they thrive on being worked - a good sound thrash up and down the motorway works wonders I find!

If doing low mileage could also be crappy fuel? Does happen....

Worth changing air filter, either for K&N 'same as' replacement or their induction kit which will deliver a little bit more performance AND at least 2-3mpg to boot, so self-funding.

Any smoking??
