stumped ? Non starter !

I'm loosing it here . The Terrano won't start.:doh
It all started just after Christmas after I returned from the UK, it had been stood for a week. the battery was flat and had to be charged up. It started but after a few days it struggled and went flat a couple of times trying to start it.
So I bit the bullet and had to pay 200€ for a new battery . It was fine for a few weeks but then started to struggle to start again. I thought a glow plug could be out, so I ordered a new set of plugs( they arrived yesterday)Then Monday it would not turn the motor at all just a dull grind. I took the battery off and it seemed fine 14 volts? but I put it on trickle charge all night anyway. Next morning put it back on and it still would not turn the engine ?
Could it be the starter motor or something more serious do you think ?:nenau

Sounds very much like the starter getting lazy. However, there was a thread not too long ago where the immobiliser had kicked in or something but I'm sure there was a fix for it. Think LazyFerret replied with the fix in memory serves.

OK it would be better to know what it read after 12 hours, 12.8 perfect bat (depending on lead composition) 12.5 still very good, 12.2 not so good, less than 12 not good at all, Rick

well Mr Salamani from the garage up the road came down this lunch time, with his big booster pack and spayed some easy start stuff in the air filter, and after a couple of go's it fired up. so we took it up to his and put it on the lifter. he is going to take the starter off tomorrow and see if it is FUBA.
It has been making a noise on starting for a long time now, same as jims (both autos) and when rick was here he took it off and fettled it a bit, but to no availe
So if it is scrap how do I make sure i get the correct one to replace it , I remeber rick saying there were several types ? :nenau

Of starter motor? I've only seen one type for the 2.7

I fell lucky last time I needed a starter as James had some Bosch ones that had been refurbed by an outfit near him that look after him for tractor bits etc, he had 2, I picked one and fitted it and it was very lazy, whipped it back off and he sent me the 2nd one which is what's on there now and it spins that quick I thought it was going to rip the block out :lol

I wouldn't go for a refurbished unit usually but as James vouched for these guys and I could see what great workmanship they had taken in it I took a punt at £50

had too replace one last year got it from sld minorfern my local motor factors £110 brand new or £80 refurb i got a new one and got £12 strap money for the old one:thumbs

I've seen two types, basically the only difference was one had a the gear half covered and the other didn't have this cover section over the gear.

Also don't forget the jonelas is a auto too so no idea if that makes a difference.

Have all the leads been checked including engine earth ?

You may have done this already but I would want to check the battery connections, any smaller leads on the same bolt.
Check the earth from battery to body.
Check the connections at the starter.
Check the engine earth strap.
You say it has made a noise for some time is it the solenoid failing assuming you have one on your model or does it sound like the starter motor?
Have you ruled out the ignition switch itself.
Last I would suspect the starter motor.
I know starter motors can fail but it's never happened to me in the last 52 years of motoring it's always been connections or a solenoid.

Basically I turn ignition on and have to wait not just for the glow plug light to go out but also wait for the red light on the sport/ice mode switch to go out too. If I don't I get a loud screech that sounds like starter motor not quite engaging into the ring gear. Me and Jonela have put it down to some kind of electrical relay slow at turning on or something.

Not to worry John, yes there are two types one Hitachi and the other Bosch, one has a nose cone the other does not but but they are completely interchangeable and it makes no difference if it is Manual or Auto, Rick

Great, that's good to know,:thumb2 I can get one next day delivery here for 179€, which isn't too bad for here.
I would have done it myself but the garage is full of motor bikes and wood, it hasn't stopped raining for two weeks (so everything is sodden) and I am in the middle of building a chicken coop, so I'd rather pay someone else to do it at the moment.

Yes it will but I think for the moment I will live with mine assuming the replacement cures it.

I cannot remember with John's but with Briggie's his ring gear was worn, new starter cannot cure that, Rick

For the hassle of replacing ring gear I'll live with it. Still think it's something electrical as Jonela says but that's another story. Fingers crossed he gets his teuck fixed and back on the road again.

The upshot !

So the Terrano is home ,after a week in the garage, six days of which was waiting for a starter to come ( 48 hour delivery ?).
The good news !: it starts perfectly now , better than I ever remember and it has cured the problem of the spinning and not engaging which jim and myself were experiencing .:clap
The bad news !: Mr Salamaney says the ring gear is badly worn and needs changing , the new starter is a temporary fix.

Oh great and not so great for you. So has a faulty starter causing the noise damaged the ring gear. Anyhoo one to Rick because that's exactly what he said. Think I'll just live with mine then.
