Have done a little research and you have to stick with what you have, that elongated housing contains a plate heat exchanger so it is indeed an oil cooler, if you think your one may break then grab that one on ebay, have you tried undoing it when piping hot? ali expands a lot so may well help, Rick

Just bought it seeing that there are bugger all elsewhere. Just it comes off the cooler if needed!

Oil filter housing stuck !

Hope you managed to get the filter undone.

I had a similar issue with my BMW Mini the alloy housing has a nut on the end and to make it difficult the filter is at the top of the engine near the bulkhead with the angle pointing towards other stuff in the engine bay.

I ended up buying an after market special tool to get it off, also had to buy a long 3/8 drive break bar as a half inch one was too bulky to fit. With loads of grunt and some choice words it came off and I am pretty sure despite the Mini Service package on the vehicle it had never been changed during it previous two services.

When I removed the filter and examined the element inside I found it choked with what looked like pure carbon. The heat of the engine block and design of the filter with a spring loaded plate inside appeared to encourage the formation of baked on black oil sludge at the filter face.

When I did the next oil change it came off normally, on the Brazilian Engined Mini the sump seal is built into the sump plug so had to fit a new one of those. The first sump plug was rounded and a guy at work got it out with a special tool. At each subsequent oil change a new sump plug was needed as the head was so soft it started to round when you looked at it with a ring spanner. I suspect the dealers use a suction tube as I had to order a sump plug each time as it was not a stock item!

The joys of doing your own servicing ! TBH I have now pretty much given up doing my own oil changes as diesel oil is so mucky.

i always do it up a bit befor undoing it,but some are pigs.try it and see.

You have my sympathy as mine was difficult (& nerve-racking, to remove first time). When you do get the filter loose (fingers crossed LOL) note the arrow cast into the side & unscrew the housing about 3 turns. Paint it white for next time!
With the arrow to the top the oil will then drain within a few minuets via the tube you've noticed. If you do this first it will be empty before the sump is ready to be re-filled.
Don't do the housing up too tight (it will seal with little more than hand tightening) & remember to smear the 'o' ring with oil. Either, or both, of these are likely to be the cause of your problem.

I usually prime the filter with some oil & quickly replace it, assuming this will help quicker circulation. Another tip is to pour 1/2L of fresh oil into the sump to get the last of the dirty oil out. Best of luck!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm waiting for the second hand filter housing to arrive. Hopefully it won't be stuck to cooler and then I'll let the garage do its best.

This post bothered me so I had to go and check mine hadn't tightened up since doing the oil change, fortunately it was ok.. What a bizarre thing to happen, I've bought cars that the oil filters have been so tight I've destroyed them removing them but always managed to get them off.. I hope you get it off ok, I wonder why they lock up like that, seems common ish thing when you google it.

I think I'll be surprised at the amount of crap in it once it is removed. The oil catch tray beneath it doesn't look as if it has caught any oil for quite some time despite FSH invoices.

I know of a Vehicle Technician who was sacked from his workplace as a result of finding a great stack of oil filters in his personal storage box below his tool box.

On investigation it was found that he had around 30 filters in storage some had specific invoice details for the parts orders on the parts labels etc mostly for lease customers.

It was done to boost his bonus payments - so if he saved time on a service it could make him over 100 % productive on a given day. It is one of the reasons I dislike bonus schemes but it's pretty much the norm these days.

I have no trust in franchised dealers whatsoever. Perry's and Evans Halshaw saw to that. Have used small family owned single site garages for the last 20 years. This is my first self service for the enjoyment of doing it and save some money at the same time.

I agree with your sentiments but to be fair a Main Dealership's Service Departments reputation is only as good as it's worst Technician.

I know some cracking good Technicians and Service Team Advisors who have to work under a great deal of downward pressure from management who are only interested in a profit and loss spreadsheet as a measure of success.

Sadly as family owned dealerships are squeezed out or have been bought out on retirement the new financial model for vehicle sales is the PLC's who want to maximise profits. Luckily there is some protection as the Premium Brands also have a keen eye on customer satisfaction feedback forced on them by the Vehicle Manufacturers with financial penalties!
This does not stop service prices rises and ever more complicated vehicle designs mean small firms struggle with the diagnostic computers that each manufacturer use with little in the way of common systems. In the case of MB this includes Digital Service Books that help prevent vehicle clocking but means a link to the MB mainframe is needed.

Here's the replacement oil filter housing and the cooler to which it was attached. I'm surprised how deep the thread goes, just under two inches.

Have been waiting for your progress. I assume they removed the oil filter before posting?
Hopefully yours will will be ok too.

Success! Terrano was booked in at the local garage on Saturday morning. I got the engine up to temperature nicely. MAF removed, 1/2" breaker bar with slow but firm rocking movements got the filter shifting without breaking. It took some effort mind. It turns out the filter wasn't that bad so maybe it had been replaced last year. Cleaned up, new filter and seal with a smear of oil and original housing torqued to 24Nm. I now have a spare oil cooler with housing. Breaker bar is on the shopping list.
