Hi all, so recently (last green laning day) i could hear a small metallic noise when travelling over speed bumps, like 2 metal cans clinking together, nothing too major. Today me and the missus have driven the terrano out, entered a side road and then immediately reversed out (full lock left) and we got this "clonk/knock" noise just once. (if you've ever heard a car bottom out or grind lightly on a raised bump this is what it sounded like)

after leaving the restaurant we returned to the truck, and at a residential cross roads put the car into full lock right and again had this noise twice during the 180 degree turn.

So the truck was behaving normally and feels fine :nenau

I decided to test the old girl, stopped in a housing estate near ours, put full lock left forward and reverse and full lock right forward and reverse --- and no noises at all :nenau

Any suggestions? if it helps I have discovered the centre box on exhaust is rotten and a hole has appeared, dont know if these flex when turning?? :nenau

Two separate problems. Heavy clunking check out the downloads and see the steering stops. Simply blob grease on them.
tinkling noise could be owt but one thing to check is the exhaust clamp brackets. Mine was one under the passenger seat.

Wicked was just reading about these steering stops, and funnily enough i did spray the crap outta the front underside today with a power wash :doh

And yeah my exhaust is also shagged so hoping the clinking is that.

How can I test the exhaust? just jack up and pull the pipe for play?

Thanks for the speedy response dude :thumb2

Clicking tin noise ?

Sound daft but have you checked the wheel bolts for torque and wheel rim for any sign of fatigue failure ?

Exhaust mounts easy enough to check. Just grab hold of them but only when cold we don't want burnt hands. Yeah arb links front and rear.

I agree about the bump stops, almost certainly that. As for the exhaust, it will move a fair bit anyway but the condition of your clamps may have a bearing on the noise. The back box should move side to side and up and down a little bit, middle section not so much, front flexi a little and front exhaust not at all!

another thing that may be loose is the guard over the prop shaft ..... I dunno if they all have this tho .... both my mistrals did and it made a horrible tinny rattling noise .,
but if it only does it on full lock then its almost certainly the steering bump stops that need a blob of grease on

Exhaust heat shields too. And yes there is one particular exhaust clamp bracket. It's below passenger seat, can't tell you if it's front or centre pipe that it attaches to. Mine used to tinkle there because the fixing nuts would come loose. I used to fit an extra nut to the clamp which locked them in place.

If on level ground, hand brake off, open driver's door, grasp the upper part of the roof member above the driver's door and rock it side to side, if you hear a clunk click every trip, then either you have Jimmy Saville under your front wheel, or your front ARB drop links have gone. :lol:lol:lol
(Might also be upper or lower ball joints or even wheel bearings, so check those too.!)
Takes 5 seconds to check, no tools required.:thumb2

The reason for hand brake off, is that there are normally clicks from the rear drums during this rocking, and can confuse the issue.:thumb2

Steering stops as mentioned for full lock clunking, but more of a graunching..:thumb2

Right, so I decided to pop my head under the car and have a look. Sure enough all of em dry as a bone with no stops atall.. So I went to scamfords and bought some multi purpose cv grease. And smeared the hell out of em. Were about to go laning so I'll see if the noise returns or not.

Before I buy the "caps" As a Temp measure just keep greasing right? :nenau

Thanks for the help all, put my mind at ease.

unless you wash it off, one blob of grease should be all you need for a long time. On my old Maverick, I greased them once in 4 years. ON my Terrano, greased them once so far in a year.

Just keep greasing, only needs doing about once every 6 months, when you do the oil change.

Another clunk can be if the second exhaust mount back, e.g the one on the silencer snaps, it is not immediately obvious, but the exhaust moves and bangs against the underside of the car when you reverse.

The T2's are full of bits that can jingle....

Side steps, the aluminium plate corrodes where it is fixed to the stainless steel bars, and the bolt comes loose causing a rattle.

The exhaust has several heat shields welded to it, but the welds corrode through on an older exhaust, and the shields rattle.

Over the exhaust, attached to the underside of the car floor is a second aluminium heat shield, which is riveted to the car floor, and like the side steps, these corrode through, and allow the plate to rattle against the underside of the car.

At the very front of the exhaust just before it turns to go up to the manifold, there is a clamp that is bolted to the gearbox, this has usually been "lost" on most older T2's as it is a pain in the a$$, but if it has not, then this works loose and rattles...

Under the bonnet, there are a load of pipes that run across the top of the firewall (Break, fuel, etc) and if these are not clipped in properly they rattle.

I am sure there was something else I found as well, but I can't remember it at the moment.

I wouldn't bother with the caps if I were you, they don't last long, probably not as long as a blob of grease.
Mine were last greased about 18 months ago, had no noise since in spite of the dusty and muddy Spanish mountain tracks.

I'll go along with that, mine are the originals, a blob of grease twice a year, or when ever the grease gun is out... I use the bit that escapes when I do the prop shafts... Not wasting any. Comma LM grease from Wilkinsons cheap as chips:lol

Why not ask them if they could light it on a week day, I have before and my neighbours were more than happy to do so.
We all do things some times that may annoy someone else, without knowing it, It don't hurt to just ask them.:)

Been out laning today, no strange noises, clunks are gone, still the metal chinking but doesent really bother me. :thumb2
