Strange running on my truck....

Hey all!

I'm a paid member already!

I have a strange issue with Big Red, the engine seems to have almost no power. Doesn't matter wether it's warm or cold, does seem to chuck brownish smoke out of the back, and it doesn't like going up hills.

I don't have any warning lights on, I think it could be the turbo (152k on the clock) and the father in law who I got it off seems to think it's the inter cooler that's blocked.

There is a bit of wetness on the end of both sides of the inter cooler and also on what I think is the oil catch/breather just in front of the intercooler on the rhs.

It's a 97 2.7 if that helps?

Help?

John.

Just out of interest, how much smoke do you get? And how sluggish? Is it intermittent loss of power or all the time?

No power at all, all of the time. struggles to reverse into my driveway at times. Extremely sluggish, will not accelerate quickly, a snail would be faster.

Only a bit of smoke at high revs.

Ok, got it in bits again. Turbo has pressure (fast air when uncovered) but does not push your hand away from the outlet.

Have also disconnected the MAF and this has made no difference, no eml etc.

Ideas please!!

if you disconnect the maf it should not run above 2k revs without misfiring even if you can get it this far, Rick

I see in your signature that you have a TD but if you have a maf you have a TDi , accurate description of vehicle = better diagnosis, Rick

Oh blimey that's bad then :doh

Rick makes a good point too :thumb2

If disconnectingthe MAF makes no difference l would suspect that that is faulty, easy to clean, just take out the two screws pull out the sensor and spray the filements with switch cleaner or brake cleaner.

I have a spare Hitachi maf you could try if you lived closer. Bri

It revs up but slowly just like it drives, but if you cover the outlet of the turbo there is no force to move your hand. Is this normal?

I had considered getting a replacement MAF too, but would like a second opinion.

Have also changed vehicle details as it is a tdi, even tho it says to on the car!

I'm share we will get to the bottom of it. Got any pictures of the terrano? :)

can I ask if you are running on svo / wvo ? ..... unplugging the maf should make a difference as rick says ..... this indicates to me anyway that the maf needs cleaning / is faulty .......as for the turbo issue ... I believe there should be enough pressure to push your hand away from the outlet ( but I could be wrong ) ....... as for the mini filter ...... try and find it , but not all trucks have it ........im guessing you've tried the obvious and checked fuel / air filter ? ....

Would a faulty maf be identifiable if the turbo is goosed though?

That's the question we need to establish

If you place your hand on the turbo outlet, while someone revs the engine you should feel some definite pressure, problem is the engine will not want to rev easily as it will be overfueling you probably will not get it to go beyond 2500-3000 revs but this should produce a pressure that will take reasonable force to hold your hand on the outlet, bering mind a good pressure is around 15 psi, this is by no means a definitive test, but should show up a knackered turbo with stiff bearings/disintegrated blades, Rick

I'm running regular diesel only. Unplugging the MAf makes no difference. Mini-filter - is not there, I'm led to believe it's part of the banjo bolt. Fuel and air filters are relatively new. No force from the turbo when covered.

Rick, this is exactly the info I wanted. I can place my hand on the outlet of the turbo and it does not push my hand off in any way.

I shall source a replacement and possibly a MAF and fit those.

Anyone got either for sale?!

That Alex is a very good question, I would assume a duff turbo will see much less air going in and so would assume the maf will see this and reduce the fuel accordingly, so in theory unplugging the maf should still make a difference, but if the lack of turbo takes the maf out of range then no it will not, one for Rayf me thinks, Rick

Bit of a chicken and egg thing here: If the MAF output is incorrect then there will be very little fuel delivery and hence little turbo action.
My best suggestion is to test the MAF output with a £5 test meter and work from there rather than guess.
Additionally, the fueling will also be limited when stationary.

I have MAF £30, was a spare l kept when l had my terrano. I am in Kendal if that is any help to you, could post it l suppose. Regards. Bri

Hitachi Ric, don't think many terrano's had that set up, poss just the first tdi early 1997. Bri

What would the MAF measurements be? I can test it very quickly and easily.
