Hi e1 my 1996 terrano has a strange noise when i go down a steep hill without any throttle its like a droning noise sounds pretty rough it only does it in gears 1 2 3 4th 5th its ok if i dip in the clutch noise goes away? I was in really deep snow this weekend needed 4 wd low now it does this noise when i take of hit 4th 5th gear its away it coming from front passenger side is the gearbox on its way out? Ty help plz

Is it a front hub that has jammed partially, theres downloads regarding them. When mine jammed together I found the hub actually got hot, not just from the brakes.

Hi jim its got manual locking hubs they work perfect there always cold same as the callipers . My original auto hubs used to heat up plus they never engaged 4wd hence i got manual hubs less to go wrong with manual hubs

Graham me old mukka!!!!

You say the noise goes when you dip the clutch which means it must be gearbox related. You mention it's when going down a hill which means that you'd be putting excess strain on engine and box because off the thrust caused by the decline and weight of the car.

Have a look through your old service books and see if you can see what and how much oil was last put in it if they were that detailed

I've heard that these boxes do get awfully noisy but still go on forever

I'm sure they start to get a nasty rattle in 2nd gear first, Rick should be able to help you more, I'm sure he did a detailed description of what causes this

Yo banshee when i first got the truck mate i checked level in gearbox when i went to top up only took about an egg cup full to top it back up so levels r ok i no what u mean noisy gear boxes when going downhill when noise is there if i give it slight throttle the noise goes new i should have baught a daihatsu fourtrak lol

does it on down hill = overrun, with fixed hubs = possible front prop UJ problem or CVJ's, Rick
