Storm Damage

We have had sum bad storm here in the past week or so as I know you have in the UK especially in Scotland. This was my project for last week and the beginning of next, A large chunk of the gable wall just fell out of this barn belonging to a friend ,after a bad night of rain.

Good job, nice one. The masonry is held in with a strange earth/lime mortar mix, we have the same down here. Had to do a few repairs to my own walls, and rebuild a stack on a friend's house.....great fun.

I have to say, I agree with Alex...
Has to be a first time for everything I guess.

What do you do if you haven't enough bricks at the end... ?

Caused by say.... thinner mortar joints.

Tommy Walsh would be there, coating everything in PVA before he started the mortaring.

Not a problem on this job,as there is another building being demolished on site,but other wise you would have to find some of the same stone from somewhere. Not difficult here,

The whole right hand side looks a bit sagged presumably its not built on what we now specify as foundations ?

LOL........they don`t seem to do them out here.......most of these old buildings date back to what would have been Victorian era in UK or even much earlier. Mine is 1897........old farm house built onto the ground, no damp course, foundations probably only a stone's depth........:nenau

For it to have weakened and fallen away like that I guess the roof must have been leaking for a period of time.As you say mud,straw and cow poo to joint,so after along time standing and no foundations with water ingress sadly the end result.Good to see it's going back to former self.Too many of these lovely buildings going to waste,thankfully this one being cared for.If you need a sparks I'm in the Gironde:thumb2
