Sticky thermostat???

While driving today I saw the temp gauge go up way higher than before and with the heater on there was cold air coming through the vents.
I headed for home and the gauge came down and the air went hot. Pulled in at the shop and when I started driving again up went the temp gauge and cold air from the heater, but a few hundred yards up the road I got hot air from the heater and the gauge went to normal.
I think its the thermostat playing up.
The top rad hose was hot but the bottom one cold.
I had to put some water in the rad and then the filler tank aswell as they were low.

So any other suggestions on the problem please?

Morethan likely thermostat but just one other thing. Have you got enough antifreeze in the system, a frozen water system can give funny guage and heate output.

I'll get another thermostat tomorrow and some antifreeze too due to the amount of water i had to top up today.

Thanks Si but that isn't the petrol engine is it?

I could do with knowing the approximate location of the thermostat aswell as the things above.
