steering wobble

hi all

drove the car today and at above 50ish mph theres a slight wobble on the steering

the only way i can expain it is if you had your hands on the wheel at ten to two and then turned a quarter of an inch to the left then right then left etc but at the speed of within a second(if that makes sense) :?

it brakes fine in a straight line if you loose the wheel???

tracking?balacing? any idea where start thanks chumba

If it was mine I would be inclined to jack the front wheels up & check the trackrod ends, ball joints & hub bearings for play 1st & then get the wheel balancing checked if everything else was ok. I know when my front hub bearings need tightening up as I can't feel the break judder any more :lol: :lol: :lol:

I'm sure the guy who runs my basic car maintenance course said that unbalanced wheels will cause this phenomenon.

First get the wheels balanced, as your tyres wear so does the shape of the tyre which can effect the balance. Might pay to rotate them while they have them off for balancing :wink:

If you still have it after that then check the rest of the steering system.

While you have it jacked up chect to see if the wheel bearings are loose.

If you’re going to jack up the front wheels chumba, it would be worth checking for any bulges or imperfections in the tyres.

thanks all,i know where to start now, but the tyres were new last year so they should be ok. ill check the balancing first

does this problem have anything to do with the road surface. mine dont like tram lines does all sort of daft things.

ps dont suppose you have been off road and got mud stuck to inside of wheel rim

i have same problem and notice its fine till i hit about 50 and remains till about 65. a mechanic friend also said to check balance.

Sounds like out of balance, but the wheel bearing could need adjusting [when you go for a balance ask the fitter he will check for play in the bearing] also what wheels have you got on....alloys are a pain sometimes to get balanced......I have alloys and I have that wobble you mention, everything on my vehicle is okay...apart from the alloy wheels, the tyre fitter took a great deal of time to balance and re-balance mine and got them as near to correct as possible.......he was the type of fitter that checked my tracking and told me to go back in a few days and he would re-check the tracking. this type of service appears to be hard to locate these days.

yeah its the standard alloys.will normal tyre dealers do the tracking or would it be a kwik fit :evil: job

I don't know if it helps but i've just remembered after getting my truck I noticed a wobble at 50-60mph & took it to get the front tyres balanced & the fitter noticed one of the front tyres had started to break up & had turned egg shaped. After fitting new tyres al was fine :smile:

You may find that some tyre dealers will try it on.....'Oh it's a 4x4 they can be a bit tricky etc'
I went to my local Nissan dealer who had all the correct equipment and was cheaper than the other well known tyre places.
I am actually saying that it's also a good idea to get em tracked at same time, as others will tell you, get it tracked about 3 times a year depending how much off-road you are doing.

I intend getting a set of steel rims and some off road tyres.
I can cope with the slight wobble around 60 as I can drive through it.

You could also try changing rear to front and see if any different first.
