the stearing has gone stupid in the mav tdi but only happens in 4wd

its like a dif grabbing from side to side but really grabbing at it. the wheels feel like they are going in different directions but like i say only in 4wd and on hard stuff is more noticable...it feels like your going to die

i have looked at the bushes on the rod that links the 2 front wheels and there is play but on the wheels when driving its like 2 inches of madness and only a couple of mm play on the bushes

recently removed rear arb and put hb 2"+20% springs on rear
but it dont feel like thats the problem

Have you wound up the torsion bars?
It may be that the tracking is now towing out.

not recently i wound them up to the max a month or so ago. noly had a dry day to lift it 2 days ago
i can get the tracking re done ... but its more like the wheels are not stearing at the same time . will look up some bushes for that link bar i guess before i get the tracking done again.

it just seems odd, not to do it in 2wd when its so bad in 4wd thats what made me ask questions see. is there something on the front drive i should check, as it only happens when there is drive to the front

Think you mean the drag link and they are ball joints not bushes - Barnyzuki had the same problem yesterday, its made worse by the tracking beng out but is kinda intrinsic in the rubbish nissan design once the ball joints start to wear.

hi hb... so new ball joints should fix it then ? any other areas worth looking at while im stripping it ?

There are ball joints all told, 4 conventional ones on the ends of the track control arms and 2 more that are built into the drag link. To change those last 2 you have to change the entire drag link and they're not cheap.

It would be worth checking your steering idler as those are none for going soft on the bushes - again its a whole thing to change but they'r enot too expensive.

when you were in 4wd were you on solid ground as it could just be transmission wind up

hi thanks for the ideas but it happens the instant you apply 4wd
so its got to be the stearing

i will have to have a good look all over it as soon as i get time

ok i have looked in the manual and all around the truck.

i have narrowed it down to the cross rod and the tie rod s.

anyone got ideas if i can just change the ball joints or do i have to buy new parts from nissan

part numbers would be really helpful too

:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs:thumbs

stearing good

well the old girl is fixed now cost a hundred in parts from milner
fitted today test driven get tracking done tomorrow.

parts needed
stearing cross rod
track rod ends 1L/H thread and 1R/H thread
2 track rod bolts both L/H and R/H thread

including delivery 102.00

tools needed
21mm 25mm spanners for track rod ends17mm 19mm sockets and spanners for ball joints etc
ball joint splitter
screwdrivers, pliers etc

its a good idea to have on standby a
4 1/2 " grinder with thin stainless cutting blade for emergencies when a joint wont split or you cant get your splitter in there is little room

quite an easy job
but there is no room to get your joint splitter in i used a halfords wind in type about 7 quid its the smallest for the room you have to work but not enough reach,
(id try the longer reach one next time)
everything is seized in there its clearly never had any new parts there
you will break the connecting track rod ends removing the cross rod so make sure you order them with your cross bar (see parts needed)

the new parts from milner's fitted nicely, although the stearing cross rod required a big washer on the swivel joint (from my spares) either due to wear on the vehicle or the hole for the split pin not right not right to fit in the castle nut

now the truck is safe to drive i will be changing the other two track rod ends, that way it will all be new in that section. it would have only taken 10 mins longer if i had done it at the same time. to be honest it looked a bigger job than it is

i will be making a bash plate for down there now.
