Hmmm - so it starts to gets cool and seems the battery like it is going with the engine struggling to turn over.

So change the battery for a new one and..... it still seems to struggle turning over.

So on the basis it isn't the battery, any bright ideas?

I know the power steering pump bearings are going but can't imagine they'd be that stiff to stop it turning over (need to free the belt and see how stiff it is I guess).

I need to check the charging, but no alternator 'not charging' light showing.

Can't see anything obvious that would be draining the battery.

Anything else obvious to check?

Starter, main power cable to starter or battery connection.

Starter motors tend to fail on these, especially if they get wet. I think I went through 2-3 starters a year.

Thanks for responding.

Changed the battery connectors earlier this year as the old ones had fallen to bits. I'll check the cables just to be sure.

Oooof. Well, living in Valencia it is pretty bone dry most of the year :)

But yes the starter motor is a likely suspect.

My money is on the starter

Had this many a time, I've started to tigerseal my starter motors on now, as much as it makes a mess and a nightmare to remove it when it does fail, it does seem to waterproof them and make them last a bit longer :thumbs

Yup - seems it gets the popular vote :)

It's been on the car ever since I bought it 13 years ago..... !!!!

the starters should be sealed on fitting.

I've never read that anywhere and pretty sure I've never seen that in the workshop download :nenau

Can imagine you and your brother between you have done more TD27 starters than I've had showers!!!

Starter Motor tiredbess?

It might not be easy to get at but Starters can part fail when the internal connections corrode and fail under high load.

Definitely worth checking - I have in the past damaged a starter by overtightening the power cable.

Thanks for all the comments.

Will cart the old girl off to my mate at his garage and we'll take a look. I'll keep you posted.

Thing barely ever gets wet these days but time (and its first 12 years in the UK) takes its toll!

Saying that, just to cheer you all up, it is raining today. First time in about 4 months!

And car parts here are about 27 times as expensive as the UK so that'll be me bankrupt!!!

Even Terrano parts?? That's where they were built so I would have thought they would have been way cheaper

pretty sure they are from factory and have read somewhere it says so and pick shows where to put sealer, cant remember where now, home brew fog.
my new still gives 95abv on first run.

Yes starter and bell housing on all T2s are given a bead of grey mastic to seal them, Rick

So as a follow up the old girl went in for surgery last week.

Replacement thermostat - hence the heating was not warm. That must have been shot for over a year as I noticed it last winter!

Replacement belt for the power steering - so it wasn't the pump bearings!

New pads at front and strip & clean rear drums & refurb handbrake cable.

And then the starter motor.

They replaced the bushes and bronze bearings... sounds super sharp now!

Spins like a demon! Fires up very easily. I just need to replace a couple of the dodgy heaters.

So job done.

Good job sir!!! :clap

When you say heaters.... do you mean the glow plugs?

I prefer the metal rod ones to the ceramic ones as I've had a ceramic one fail and drop into the combustion chamber on my old Maverick, it wasn't long after that it started using more oil than Diesel :( :doh
