Hi, have just bought 10 yr old Terrano ii, was running very well until about a week ago. Very cold here in the north of scotland (has been minus 10deg in the past week!), noticed it was labouring a bit on starting...charged battery up, (3 dry cells, now fine) but there doesn't seem to be any sign of it firing up. Have looked through your handy downloads on fuel filter + glow plugs (brilliant by the way!). Have drained filter (no water) and bled to get rid of any air. Glow plugs look fairly new and heated up twice before turning ignition key.... But still no avail. Is this normal?? The Tii ( I have called it Testos..think about it...) has been well looked after but stood for a couple of months before I bought it. Any ideas folks?? Thanks, Martine

I'm no mechanic but I was going to say Glow Plugs straightaway. Are all of them working OK? don't forget looks can be deceiving, they may look new and good but might not be. BTW whats the engine? is it Tdi

can you hear the glow plug relay clicking under bonnet when you turn ignition on get mrs to turn it on whilst u listen

Thanks for quick reply - am new to forum thingy, it is a 2.7TDi SLX.
I can hear the relay ok and also the relay to pump?

think theres down load on how to test time there on for to be safe though your gonna have to take them out and carefully test them if u/s replace them do u have fuel at injectors ?

starting problems

I had the same problem,All four heaters were dead,Easy to test out of the engine with a 12v supply, bought mine on ebay for £19.95 plusP&P.what a difference it made, starts straight away without any smoke.
The glow plugs are made by wellman part no W570.....www.glowplugs.co.uk.they can supply direct from the factory

Will have to check, was hoping it wouldn't be necessary...would all 4 plugs go at the same time? Makes sense maybe.. if they were already weak, the cold weather might have made all the difference... Thanks for advice, will let you know how I get on!

one/two could go down but best change all four you know then there all good and not likly to let u down anytime soon

STARTING PROBLEMS

Mine were the origional heaters, after 100 thou miles its not surprising they were all dead, wip em out and check, the whole job took an hour to do.Be carefull with the plastic slothead tops as the get brittle,I snaped my first couple so loosen them with a pair of grips first. You can get the tops fron the main dealers for just over a quid each.To test them fix a wire to the top and connect to +12volt and ground the screw section and the end should heat within seconds, don't hold it too long as they normaly glow red hot.I tested the new ones as well before i fitted them.
The Ebay seller is called azcarpartsuk, it really does improve things no end,You might check your oil as the deisel washes past the rings if you keep cranking it over without firing.Hope this helps
All the best

You lot are great! Thanks. Have ordered glow plugs anyway. Been under bonnet this morning (new year - start as you mean to go on) and undone one injector and turned engine over - dry as a bone = no fuel flowing. I take it this means there is no electrical supply to the pump as I couldn't hear relay ( I thought I could but was mistaken). This is now where I'm stuck, understand electrics less than mechanics. Solenoid? Presently looking through downloads to see if there are any handy household hints - at least I'll have a spare set of glow plugs!! Happy New Year all.

has it got the nissan imobilser fitted (nats) it may have forgoten the code for key i dont think u can get at fuel stop solenoid to put live on it to by pass all ignition etc!

check theres no rust around the earth wire or any others for that matter on the fuel pump

There is a stop solenoid on the injector pump, you can find it behind the throttle cable,it has a green plastic end with a red cable attatched. This stops the fuel to stop the engine. It should have a 12v+ve feed whilst the engine is running. If you have a red led on the top of the dash you have an embolizer via a chip on the key. If you have got no fuel try powering the stop soloniod directly via a wire to the battery, dissconnect the red cable first.
Thats all the electrical faults at the engine end from there its fuel pump then fuel system, it could just need bleeding?
Hope this helps.

Thanks Loonie, I have located the stop solenoid, disconnected the connector block leading to it and then re-connected it with the ignition key on, no click from the solenoid. There is a red light on the dash but key has no fob or device on it - should there be one or am I just being dumb??

Does your key have the red spot on it which is the immobiliser chip, if this has lost it's programming would this be the problem?

scottyms,

Just to clarify is yours the 2.7tdi or the 2.7td engine :?:

sounds like a tdi tenyr old tdi slx so will the stop solenoid be shielded for security?

Hi Toolbox and JimT. I thought it was a TDi (thinking the i meant injection) but now realise lack of intercooler makes it a TD - doh! There is no red spot on key by the way...

If it’s a TD then, I would, if I were you, be looking a cleaning the mini filter in the injection pump, as in the downloads.
