had problems recently on the cold mornings getting the terrano started. the ignition was turning fine with all electrics working etc but just not getting that final kick to start the engine.
thought it must be my battery so went out yesterday and bought a new battery, went out to start it this morning and it still done the same thing as the day before.
it starts first time with a jump start.

whats the next thing for me to check/replace?

getting fed up with this... its cost me over £1000 in repairs since xmas but i dont have the heart to get rid of it coz its my wee baby!!!

Have a look in the downloads section, there is a workshop about testing your glow plugs. From what you have said one of these may well be a candidate.

have good look at battery leads there prone to snapping, also check any earth straps make sure getting good contact.

alternator have you checked that see if its making electic for the battery to hold?

ive checked the battery terminals - all seem clean and fine!
Ive downloaded the instructions for checking the glow plugs but on my way to buy a multi meter my wiper arm disconnected from its fixing so ive spent all afternoon trying to fix that unsuccessfully!!!
Once ive fixed the wiper im going to have a go at the download.... then im going to have to fix my passenger window which has stopped working, then fix the drivers door seal which has come away from its fixings and the fixings have disappeared... by that time something else will have went wrong elsewhere no doubt.... aaaaaaagggggghhhhh...
I need my car every day for work so i have to get it back on the road very quickly....

crikey mate youve gota be unlikest terrano owner to grace our site lol there usally so reliable fingers crossed it all just clicks into place after short break from it!

have to admit im getting hacked off with it all, but its my baby and i cant bear to part with it!!!

Hope you get everything sorted m8..
I guess it's true what they say about a car being built on a friday!! :?

Been there & almost sold mine  but have kept on as one day it should be ok

Right.... ive tested the glow plugs as per the download, all reading spot on as per instruction... AAAAAgggghhhh... i was hoping one would be gubbed!!!
ive checked the battery terminals: all clean and fitted correctly
ive checked the alternator: working fine
ive checked the glow plugs as above: all spot on

why doesnt my car start on cold mornings??

it starts no bother the rest of the day only fails to start when its a freezing morning.
it turns and turns but just doesnt get that final hit to start.

any other suggestions??

your not down on compression or anything plenty oommph and sensible smoke? other thing could be fuel running back to tank overnight or rotted fuel piped letting air in? check out threads by terrence in a search!

thanks Jace, had a read through it but doesnt appear to be that problem. The car runs fine, no loss of power, nothing else different.
only problem is that it wont start when its cold in the morning, the car could sit all day and would start no bother later in the day, once its jump started there are no other problems with it till the following morning no matter how much i drive it that day!!

Have you checked your connections on the starter motor looking for corroded or lose connections?
Your starter motor is turning over but maybe not enough grunt.

Cheers Rossco,

i'll give that a try but if there was a loose or dirty connections why does it start no bother every other time of the day, its just the cold starts it doesnt like??

its a 95. originally thought it must be the battery and went out and bought a new one... it obviously isnt the battery!

Rag1873,

Did you test the resistance of each plug individually with the buzz bar removed and did you check the voltage supply was there when key was turned on and then went to the on/off stage? Just wonder whether you have a duff temperature sensor that is telling the ecu the engine is warm when it is actually freezing.

When the engine is warm it easier to turn over than cold so requires less power, a bit like a lawn mower when cold it a "whats it" to start than when warm I guess
I hope you get it solved soon
