Every now and again when I turn the ignition I hear a a whiring sound and metallic click but the engine does not turn over :(. When I try again all is normal .
Any ideas?:nenau

Sounds like the starter motor it spinning but not firing out onto the flywheel

Yeah that is what I thought, will it just be a matter of taking out and lubricating?

You could try that, it could even be a simple conection problem, worse thing is the srarter motor has started to die

Thanks will check connections first, hope it's not dying already spent enough over last couple of months.

Yeah, I bought a new starter a month ago for £80. if it is buggered, you might get a cheaper one in the sales.

Also could be a broken tooth on the starter or the fly wheel.

Put it in gear and roll it then dump the clutch, then try to start it again.

As you move the engine a little it my conect next time, showing a posible toothe broken. If not then bad starter motor.....I hope, :naughty

Have you tried a new battery?

A poor battery will enable the motor to spin, the bendix will spin out but rather than engage into the flywheel, it will grind against it. There is not enough energy for motor to throw the bendix out hard enough to ride into the teeth on the flywheel.

Starter clattering & rattling ...

1998 2.7 Tdi Long w/b
3 years back/ about 20,000mls ago I used to get horible clattering noises on key turn, with no engine rotation .... sounded like a real bag of nails !! this would clear on 2nd or 3rd attempt & then start OK ... new battery/ fully charged seemed to make no difference. Previous owner had receipts for replacement starter motor from MILNERS ... but £costly ( £140+ ?? )

Took starter off & to a local electro-battery business who informed me that this model had an internal clutch plate ... which was stuffed ... (starter itself was OK) ... he did me a re-build for £50 and all has been well for 3 yrs ,but now clattering has re-commenced & it looks like I may have to re-visit & have it done again.

infernal clutch on a starter was new news to me.I have used the guy lots & always found him honest. .... anybody throw a confirmation light on this ???

yes most pre engage starters have a clutch, it is basically a one way device, as these starters are "pre engage" it is possible that once the engine is running that if it is still engaged (key in start position, solenoid stuck) that engine driving starter it will spin itself to destruction, so one way clutch is employed to to stop this happening, however your problem could just as much be the contacts in the solenoid getting worn so as it makes and the starter load comes in it chaters, a bad battery/earth connection can do the same thing, Rick

Cheers Rick,
bad connections were the first thing I tried, the solenoid is a bit more challenging ...though I have done them before now ! ... the problem went away (for 3 years) for £50 ... in mid-winter,I might take that option again !!

Thanks for the info
