My Terrano developed a 'squeak' on the way home tonight, only very slight when going over bumps.

A quick Googling point towards drop links. Am I on the right track?


It has also been making the occasion clunking sound at seeming random intervals.

Mine does it too but I can't replicate it by bouncing the front of the car for some reason. It did it before I changed the drop links and still did it afterwards - been round with a can of spray grease to try to narrow it down, but still no closer to finding where it's coming from. I have a feeling it might have started after the front shocks were replaced, but I would have thought if they were the problem I would get the squeak when I bounce the front.

I can replicate the sound by bouncing the front of the car.
A pair of drop links is £15 delivered, they can't be that hard to change, right?

drag link or drop links make this noise i know as i've had it happen on both items and replaced both items to get rid of the problem lol knocking could also be shocker bush :naughty

When I first got my mav it used to squeek ocassionally, so I waxoyled every moving bush I could find and the squeek disappeared and never came back, and my mav is now 17 years old.

The mav is still on the original bushes, ball joints, rear drop links, so the waxoyl really worked, and has not damaged the rubber at all.

I have however replaced the front drop links now 3 times in 17 years, they are more vulnerable to splashing than anything else.

Front drop links will be changed then, I'm guessing it's pretty much a case of undoing a few nuts, lining the new drop link up and tightening a few nuts up?

I'd undo the drop links first and then do your shake test as it may not be them at fault. I find they tend to clunk and bump more than squeak. However the top arm bushes do squeak and are a pain to change, but will respond well to some oil squirted on them :thumbs

The lower nut, you need the right size socket, and the top is usually hexagon shaped, so a spanner can be used.

The bolt on the ARB actually has an allen key socket in the end, to stop the thread turning.

Before you start, spray the threads with WD40 a day or so before.

1/2 hour job on a good day, no need to jack up the vehicle.


The hole in the lower wishbone, often elongates, so a large washer each side helps.

Make sure you assemble the rubbers and the supplied metal washers in the correct order.

Just ordered some, should be here Monday.

I'll give the underside a good WD40ing Saturday/Sunday (depending on weather, of course)
While I'm changing the drop links I'll give every possible gap on the suspension a good oiling/greasing.

Thanks for the help, I shall update Monday/Tuesday with either a happy report or a ****-ton of swearing!

at that price you might be replacing them again in 6 months. You'll need an allen key to stop the top 'bolt' turning and a spanner to stop the bottom 'bolt' turning.
Or a hack saw.:augie

I didn't contemplate that they might be made of balsa wood and duct tape though...

Decided to have another go at curing my squeak, sprayed the drag link ends, the shocker bushes, the drop links and any other joint or bush I could find with spray grease - IT'S GONE, after driving me mad for a year.
All I have to do now is find what's causing the rattle in the back door and stop the brakes from pulling to the left - ho hum!

rattle in the back door is probably the spare wheel bracket

Thats what I thought Briggie, but after taking off the spare wheel and inner card several times I cannot see or feel anything loose - run out of spare plastic retainer clips now, so I'll leave taking the door card until I get some more, thanks for that anyway.

I decided it must be something to do with the spare wheel, so I took the spare wheel off, failing to see anything there, I unbolted the carrier. One bolt seemed excessively rusty compared to the others, so I found a replacement. Oiled all the threads, cleaned it all up as I had it off, bunged a thick layer of Mer polish all around everything, and put it all back together...

Squeak has gone, but I have no idea where it was actually coming from.

Pulling to one side on the brakes, possible opposite side caliper seized slightly. Easy fix, remove caliper, pop pistons out, clean everything, put it back together.

I've tried greasing all the bolts (the ones holding the bracket on and the nuts holding the wheel on) but hasn't stopped the rattle (not really a squeak on mine, definately a rattle, over bumps, when I close the door, even if I give the door a bash with my hand I get the same rattle)
