My 'Troll has developed an odd squawking noise (a bit like squeaking, but lower pitched).

It comes from the front nearside wheel area. It's a wheel speed noise - starts when you set off, repeats with wheel rotation - squawk squawk squawk squawk sort of thing. It doesn't happen when I reverse off the drive - only seems to happen moving forward. It can happen when moving in a straight line, but seems louder when on right hand lock (and especially in Tescos carpark after shopping!!). It only seems to happen at low speeds - disappears at much past walking speed. It doesn't happen all the time - sometimes it goes for a day or two with no squawking. It generally stops squawking after a few hundred yards - but sometimes starts again after a stop at the traffic lights. All I've done so far is remove the wheels and pressure wash around the brake calipers - no improvement.

I used to have an Isuzu Trooper and that developed a similar squawk. If I remember correctly, it resulted from brake disk wear. Changing the disks got rid of it.

Any ideas?

could be the disc or the sliders as u say it sometimes comes back when u brake

Have you used 4wd recently ? It could be your auto/manual hubs. To check, undo the hub and see if it goes away :thumb2
PS what trol have you got?

sounds similar to a noise from a 4x4 made by one of the tyre fitters when i was in the game , he was young lad had struggled to lift the wheel onto the hub finished bending the guard that stops shit getting into the disc customer set off sounded like youv,e described , we removed his wheel again & he had kinked the back disc guard , he was put onto fiesta for a while since then:lol it could be worth a look easy done if the wheels been off recently good luck:thumbs

Thanks folks, I've checked most of those over the last week or two - apart from the caliper sliders.

It was only yesterday that I pressure washed all the nooks and crannies in & around the brake calipers. It's the first time I've done that since the 'Troll was up to its axles in mud on Dere Street last November. I've been out this morning and so far, its as quiet as the grave. No sign of a squawk.

I did hear on the Aussie 'Troll forum that getting mud in the wrong places and letting it dry and go hard can cause this. I'll keep my fingers crossed .......

It was one of the things I checked when I had the wheels off yesterday - not that.

Last time I used the 4wd for real was on Dere Street last November. The semi-auto hubs seem to work fine. It did occur to me that it might be lack of lube in the hubs (unlikely but possible) and I've driven around a few times recently (not in 4wd!!) with the hubs locked just in case - no change

The 'Troll is a 2005 3litre (ZD30) SVE. It has semi-auto hubs - i.e. usually auto, but you can lock them manually too.

Just a quick update. I've been out on five short trips today - including a trip to Tesco. Not a squeak - definitely fixed. Twas mud. The brake pedal action near the top of travel is noticeably smoother too.

That was an easy fix, wasn't it?

if it only happens when you go to Tesco, then try Asda instead......:nenau:nenau

I have had that on my T2, crap caught behind the dust shield on brakes, makes an awful noise. Well sorted :thumb2
