Rick has been proved right about the leisure battery starter battery debate. So forever more we can refer to this photo :clap

That said a little leg pulling is allowed :lol

Yeah. It's great fun watching people spend over £125 for a battery they could get for £60

Can that be true ?

Can you really get a battery for £60 that is the same specification as one for £125 please educate me !

Would it hold its charge for long periods like a AGM technology battery I doubt it ?

I bought a Bosch Battery from Eurocarparts for our old Mini for £38 and it failed at 3 years old completely I suspect they are either seconds or specially made budget versions as the part numbers are often not comparable to OEM ones.

The £65 Platina 105 Ah 950 cca Calcium type battery that I put in our old Chrysler 300CRD never had the voltage when fully charged as the Yuassa battery in our Jeep WJ. Were talking 12.1 volts compared to 12.3 volts on identical Type 01 casings.

That one was £60 and has failed after 4 years but the point of the post was the label :thumbs

Thanks for the up but as I have always said there is no such thing as a leisure/deep cycle start battery the thickness of the plates says it all, if it can develop high cranking amps it is a start battery, the same battery cannot stand deep cycling for very long as each time it is deep discharged bits fall off the plates and it sulphates up, my deep discharge batteries have a design life of 15 years plus at an average of 300 complete discharge/charge cycles (to 80% discharge) per year, you can only get deep discharge leisure batteries as 2 volt cells and build your own bank for your purpose, or conversely buy start batteries but never ever discharge them more than 30% and never leave them in that state for more than a few hours, Rick

That's interesting information - got me wanting to understand more about the term leisure/deep cycle batteries so found this link. I am guessing that your deep cycle battery that has the thicker plates have caused the casing to bulge due to starting demand / recharging cycles - maybe thinner plates would have warped inside without causing the casing to bulge but still led to failure.

I have noticed that Halford no longer list the Yuassa Black range with lifetime warranty.

When we bought our SL in 2003 in had a new looking battery fitted the Brand I had never heard of (now forgotten) not OEM MB or Varta etc, it was an old fashioned type with a row of screw tops. I used to keep it connected to my C-Tek charger over the winter months when we laid her up. The battery was replaced in December 2012 as it stopped holding charge. That was a life span of at least 9 years 7 months plus as I had no idea when it was fitted by the previous owner.

I replaced it with what seemed like great cost (£137.95) an AGM battery from Battery Megastore, I must have been mad as it was almost twice the cost of a Varta OEM spec one. This battery is still going strong but is only 6 years old I doubt it will outlive the previous battery though.
