The police radio net is encrypted and separate from other traffic, has to be :thumb2

Theres no dedicated mobile networks or links for emergency services but the normal network can be closed down in various stages and only enabled users allowed to access :D they nearly got as far as using it in London during the 7/7 bombings. Dont think they did though.

Tbh when the end of the world comes it be down to the Flanders carrier pigeon to see us through.

funny about domestic mobile demand, cos when orange went live they reckoned
they had enough capacity to cover every person in china, ok not a great deal of
use in england, steady now, so how come still get network busy at new year
if their systems so capable.

Im using my iPhone. Works fine even though the computer blew up:lol

that radio looks like a bit of clansman kit to me.

Interesting, transistor derived technology but did not fail, was it powered up at the time of the sun spot? although according to info I have accumulated on the subject over the years even un-powered devices will fail, but who knows, Rick

They reckon in a major incident most cities would lose most of their standard mobile coverage in a very short time (cant recall exact figures at this time of night :D ) Thats why only the very unwise have reliance on mobiles in their emergency and business continuity plans, have a bag of change and a little black book.

Theres loads of anecdotal evidence and accounts after Manchester and London to name just 2 where phone boxes kept going strong, plus BT bring in their emergency kit :thumb2

If anyone gets the chance to via local retail or other organizations, go to an Operation Argus presentation. The local counter terrorism bods do it. Very good :thumb2

Few years back where i lived there was a massive power surge. Loads of people reported their computers blowing up but in the cold light of day it seemed it was the first stop into the appliance that had blown, switched on or not, ie modems or cable boxes :thumb2

just argus it eh?

funny how many folks only have mobiles, or at home have wireless phones
and no wired phone for back up.

we keep an oldish wired bt phone next to the modem.

similar vain how many have payg phones only and always (nearly) out of
credit. sloppy behaviour when have youngsters at home.

Who needs a solar storm.....the biggest telecoms company in China (Huawei) is offering to install a £50m mobile network across the entire London Underground for the Olympics bid so that you can make calls from anywhere on the Tube. :thumb2

They are offering to do it for free.

Now I can't imagine why they'd want to do that....?:nenau

Oh wait, yes I can...!:doh

just argus it eh?

you wouldnt...well you probably would.........believe how many people get them mixed up :thumb2

They also launched the project around the same time as Richard E grant was doing the Argoosy ads, its a national exercise led and developed by the secret organisation based in London who previously didnt exist but now actually have a web site advertising how to apply to be a spy ......... only in this country eh :doh:doh:doh

(ps this is all public domain stuff :thumb2)

I've at last got round to going WiFi on the main computer, using a USB RFI dongle, so the telephone wire is no longer directly connected to the computer via the Hub.

Last Summer we had a close lightning strike, luckily I had pulled all cables out of the computer.
When I tried it all, two phones had blown up, also the Hub, in fact I got a shock from the Hub, as the power supply had shorted out.

If the computer had been connected, the computer would have been wrecked, also the screen, keyboard, printer, scanner etc.
