If we are talking loads of water, in the engine compartment, what happens to the poor old starter motor and the alternator when they are submerged, I hope we are only talking fresh water.
What about electric fans if fitted?

Is there a plug in the bottom of the bell housing to prevent water getting to the clutch plate, I remember my Dad's LR had a small plug screwed into a plate ready for removal and placing in the housing. Never used it though.

Also don't forget that the breather for the rear diff may need extending as it is only at floor level, the gear box and transfer box, maybe the front diff? are linked to a breather that is on the driver's side bulkhead under the bonnet.
When hot things hit cold water they will take a deep breath, as indeed we would

Option 1

External Snorkel
This gets you from the turbo to the outer wing
3x 60mm 90's in silicone
2x 60mm ally straight pipe
Then cut a hole in your outer wing in line with the inner wing hole that's already there

Then change over to guttering to get you upto the roof & wake on a K&N

Option 2

Internal Snorkel
This gets you through the bulk head
1x 60mm 90 in silicone
1x 60mm ally straight pipe

Then choose a number of different types of hose or tube to get you upto the roof

Put a filter behind the glove box

Just for the record  I dont have a filter at all, just a pair of tights over the snorkel top :augie :D
& mines been tried & tested inside & outside of the motor :augie Its 100% water tight :D

What denier are the tights though, not that I would know about that?
But fish net tights would only keep the herring out.
Apologies to Briggie if he gets too excited on the thought of this.

That reminds me, .... Do kippers swim folded or flat?

Pass :lol what ever was in me mums bottom draw  :lol

Adz 60mm seems a bit narrow for good airflow!!!

No, it's fine as that's the size of the turbine inlet :thumbs Only add to pressure :thumbs

Won't the K&N filter on the top block up easily with rain and mud?

thats the good bit, you take it off and wash it!

i dont like the cone filters tho found them to be a pain preferred the panel filter

also i dont like the look of the cone on top

i would prefer to keep the filter box as is at least that way if i do get any moisture in it isnt straight to the turbo not after this week end anyway

i was thinking about getting the scoop type top and fitting a prefilter to that but not sure how much airflow it will stop

i didnt want a hole near the front of the wing wanted it more near the driver i think it would look a bit neater than a bloody great long pipe across the wing

is silicone better to use than the ribbed pipe work then ?? halfords do that stuff dont they i can get 2" and 2.5" pipe work free as farther in law is a plumber, have thought about metal pipe dont want stainless as i am going to colour code it to the rest of the car

If i do another 1 :nenau it will be external :thumbs

Doesnt seal

The later tdi does though

It still lets water in

ah ok then what can i do to rectify this then cause i really dont want a cone or an external filter would a newer lid make any difference ? or is it the whole unit

Just put a KnN replacement filter in the box. The seal is made with the filter rubbers:rolleyes:
Pre filter if you want, but mines been fine as long as I remember to shake the birds out now n then:lol
Starter n alternator get wet, dry out , get wet dry out :augie
Breathers are already to bulkhead ht:thumbs

do you still use your original filter housing ???

ah but the filter seals only seal the top pipe not the box/tin so if water was to get into the engine bay above the filter box, would the boxes seal not come into affect here ???

have you got a pic of both internals of yours and i have seen adz's one but could be good to add in here as well

Just look on my pics link, it's all there.
I've been windscreen level and no issues.

Indeed you are right! When I drowned my sammy the only part that died was my starter motor! Had to replace it with a new one.
It is also recommended to extend all of the cars breather pipes and locate them into your snorkel :thumb2

Just wondering how can I confirm my airfilter box is the right type that seals so I can mod it by blanking off the hole there and putting one on the other side for a snorkel? I beleive it's the TDI models that the airfilter has a watertight seal?

My mate has a brandnew mig welder I could probably use you see.

PM extreme-4x4 & or makeitfit as they have the same filter box as you plus you could go & see for yourself :thumbs
