I dont think I'll be changing the under bonnet arrangement! Just up grading the pipework on the outside to 76mm Stainless with some sexy stainless brackets.

It Might not look the buisness but it works.. and at the moment that's all that matters.. I haven't tested the door seals up to the windows yet!!!!!

Woh up nelly. Dont cut too near the bulk head as theres not enough room behind the wing for the pipe. I did am external snorkel on my old mav. Just used a southdown wing moulding (ebay) then a piece of stainless exhaust bent to match the screen pillar. Then a southdown air intake on the top(ebay), its better than a mushroom as you'll get plenty air in it on the road and just turn it round off road.
I cant find the pics but they were on here some where.
Inside you just need some flexi pipe (ebay) through the hole in the wing where the old plastic intake was and then connect up to the filter box. Buy a K n N filter to put in there and fanny's your aunt:sly
Cut through the wing with a hole cutter simples
BUT for sex appeal go extreme:naughty
Cheap as chips and totally neat

seen that they were in the gallery on here but dont know where that is lol

how did you fit it to the side on the door or on the pillar ??

cheer patrol man gives me a couple of ideas

how water tight are all the conection on the turbo and the airbox if say the car was to be in 4ft of water ???

also with the 30" tyres dont think i will have too many problems on play days any more lol at least i wont get grounded out where i do now lol and wont get drowned as well lol

30" tyres are only about an inch if that taller than std, so not much gain really.
The usual prob is dropping into water as the air intake is in the front of the wing:doh
Anyway seals are good for windscreen level easily(not been deeper than that)
Fitting to the pillar is easy too. Just peel back the rubber strip a bit and you'll see the s/s screen surround bit. I used some stainless j/clips and fitted the tail end of them to the pillar, then carefully trimmed the rubber back over them. The door never leaked or whistled.

i bought the tyres used to try only cost me £56 for the 4 so nothing ventured nothing gained am still looking at 31" new as they run in at about £180 delivered but then i have to modify arches if i can get away with 30"'s for the most part then should be ok

right where can i pick up a cheap piece of pipe which would do the business

i have had a look through the old gallery and dotn know what i am looking for lol also have noticed not many t2/mavs get the snorkel treatment

You can get the pipe on ebay or from some decent exhaust centres that make st/st systems to measure! The problem I had was trying to find somewhere that would bend 3" pipe Most exhaust fabricators only go upto 2"-2 1/2" and this is somewhat restrictive for the 4.2 sohuld be OK with the 2.7TD. just look on the standard system at the smallest point in the induction side and don't go any smaller than that!!

links to other forums is fine (as i have said before). also this is i believe cosmics site/ forum. a break away forum from here ages ago. but thats still fine - its a 4x4 forum

now it gets tricky when someone posts links to NISSAN 4X4 FORUMS on here. for the simple reason , again as most people here know and bat has told everyone , bat paid around 5 grand for this site, from what i can see he dont make much if anything from providing us with this place. and its one of the VERY FEW RULES we have to if not protect his investment , at least make sure we dont encourage people to join other NISSAN BASED FORUMS and make our forum eventually loose money and have to fold.
something that was a real threat prior to bat purchasing the forum.

are we all clear now... its not the mod team being anal , its just basic economics and making sure you all have a nice , fun safe place to play for the future

I plan to make one from pressure rated PVC pipe and fittings for strength. As I have a load of bits in different sizes and used it for various projects.
You can get clear pipe but it's expensive.

Is the pipe ridged, rated for pressurisation ?

How will it cope with a vacuum or negative pressure:nenau ?

It's used alot in irrigation systems and carp stuff. It looks similar to drain pipe but usually dark grey, Lots of different sizes and fittings available.

It will cope fine with vacuum but not sure the same PSI.
I meant strength as in bashing it, As drain pipe is weak. Unless you were asking for a use you had inmind yourself.

Edit: Ah I think your asking about the Clear PVC pipe? it's just like drain pipe again, Many sizes available. Its rated for 16bar (theres other rated less), Again no idea if vacuum rating would be the same.

More than capable using it for a snorkel and good for looking if anything nasty has been sucked in.

i had clear flexi pipe with coil wire to strengthen it .... worked great

BUT
the coil makes noise where straight pipe is almost silent

and

clear you can see all the crap and crud growing inside the pipe . looks rank

i had another idea for a snorkel . ill have to tell you more when im not sneeking on between looking for a job ...

When you create a vacuum in a pipe, it can only be -1 bar compared to atmosphere, ie only 15 psi on the outside pushing in, so it should be fine on induction side.
Lay flat hose, wouldn't be suitable though !

it's solid and alot stronger than drain pipe.
I think I will sticking with grey pressure rated PVC anyway as I already have pipe and then paint it.

Problem with clear pipe, you suck in all sorts of dust and it dont stay clear for long! The one I made had clear pipe but six months after it was dust coloured

That could be a plus point to a filter on top of the snorkel...

The diahatsu air filters are trick things anyway with a built in dust trap before the filter element so it didnt matter for me

This problem has been sorted by most safari-style snorkel manufacturers in quite a clever way, but I notice for the Southdown products this is not the case.
The Air-Flow snorkel that is on my old Samurai has a forward facing intake with vents on the lower section. This allows rain to hit the back of the intake, then trickle down and out of the vents at the bottom of the intake section. It does not restrict air flow and definitely stops rain getting in, I checked my filter after a full day of playing in the rain and it was snuff dry.
Its difficult to explain but if you look at a proper safari-snorkel top you'll see what i'm talking about.

It is something definitely to think about, for my home made snorkel I could not think of an easy solution other than fitting the mushroom top :thumb2

I drilled a small 2mm hole at the low point of my internal pipe so any water forced in at speed simply dribles into my glove box :lol (see pics)
IF I was ever deep enough long enough to get the water up to the glove box INSIDE the car it still wouldnt be a problem as 2mm hole is nothing compared to 70mm air intake. The air box has a drain hole in it too.

mine is totally sealed unit . forward facing off the screen . yes it will take rain in . but less than a thimble full in tens of miles. its really not a problem

remember its sucked it at such quantities and speed any rain is vaporized. makes it run better if anything.

im sure adz will be along soon . i remember he had an uncle in fibre glass. id like some wings made up for the front could incorporate a snorkel into that during manufacture
