hi guys whilst replacing my rear shocks today i was trying to undo the top shock absorber nut and the poxy thread snapped what do i do ???????????

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

the thread is not long enough to get a nut on either !!!!!!!!!!!

Milners are around £31 for shocks. Not really worth repairing, at look on the bright side - at least they will be new!

.

Hi dan the shock absorber hasn't snapped the mount on the chassis has snapped . Where the top of the shock fits ove has a thread about 1/2 long which has a nut the tightens against the shock with a washer, its the thread that jas snapped so I can't hold the shock on at the top.

post pics so we can see what you done that way one of us can adise you better

Yeah, Whack a pic up - usually it is the thread on the shock that snaps, has a square end to hold with an 8mm spanner, whilst you do up the bigger nut below, that holds the shock in place.

If the chassis mounting bracket has snapped, it will need welding. If the shock thread has snapped - and it is just a matter of holding the shock still, whilst you tighten it up, then use can use a filter wrench, a strap of a peice of rope. Depending on what you use - but if a strap or rope, tie around it, shove a screwdriver between the two and wind up the screwdriver tight. That way, it should hold the shock whilst you tighten the top nut - bit of a bodge way round, but works.

sorry forgot pic

this is how i managed to get it held on the a bit of mig weld on the washer and a ratchet strap too stop it moving there is about 2 threads left of the thread that the nut screws onto and i cant compress the rubber enough too even get that on let alone the washer to stop it popping off.

i realise what i have done is only a temp measure but i need to use the truck

but im really not sure what to do ?

:confused::confused:

difficult welding job, or saw the remains of the bolt flush drill it out to tapping size thread it and use a bolt, this will only work if the bracket is solid for around 20 mm to get enough thread, Rick

I would get a bolt with the same thread and collar and a bit longer then i would cut the old bolt off, drill a hole out deep enough for the bolt to sit a fair way and make sure the bolt is a snug fit, then with a bigger drill bit drill the same hole deep enough to weld in then the cut the head othe bolt push it in the hole weld it up grind of the excess weld then your done

.

sorry mate perhaps im being silly but the whole mounting is not threaded its a smooth finish which the shock fits on are you saying cut the whole mounting off and use a bolt the fits the shock aborber mount itself drill a hole where the old mounting was then weld it up ?

sorry for sounding dumb but ive never been on for working out what can and cant be welded :doh

.

if i cut what remains of the bolt the drill back into the smooth bit that the shock sits on ?

how will i clamp the shock in position with the weld thats there ?

sorry for sounding dumb but i just cant work out how it will pan out
