Black smoke = unburnt fuel not neceserilly too much, could be injector squerting instead of atomising,

OK so do you have all the details re timing, it is not just a case of turn the pump till it sounds right, I have not looked it up in the manual, but it will be a case of set the crankshaft to a set point and probably remove a plug on the pump and insert a set sized shaft, if it does not go turn the pump till it does, there is no other way, I have 30 odd years of diesels and would not attempt it without the workshop manual to hand, Rick

NO NO NO, if you are a tooth out it will run like a bag of s?t, you are talking slots on the pump, most usually there is a line scribed on the body by the slot and a line in the engine the two should line up, but as I say on the T2 I have had no dealings but 3-4 mm in the slot is a lot of advance/retard, Rick

Ta for that :thumbs

I think i'll let me M8 do it or see if it needs a tinkle & i'll watch n learn :bow :thumbs

I'd probably blow it up  :doh :lol

Black smoke is fuel that is not burnt correctly generally associated with too much fuel, fuel that is not atomized correctly or not enough air to burn it correctly.

White smoke is fuel that is not burnt, cause normally by incorrect timing. Cold combustion and heavy fuelling on start up also has this effect.

Spot on, just could not remember all the details, Rick,,,,,, I must lay off the wine, but no what the heck.
