I was away with the caravan for the first time this weekend with my 2003 2.7SE Terrano LWB. I noticed immediately that when i accelerated for a hill, my engine revs are going up but the pulling power seams to be lacking. So i would have to lift my foot off a little to let the revs return to normal and accelerate slowly. Only when pulling the caravan have i noticed this, yet i always felt this Terrano didn't have the same grunt as my 2004 one. Same car just a year appart, although i didn't have the caravan then. That one got written off when twat Civic driver pulled right into my path when i was doing close on 50mph. Both cars wrecked, i steped out of mine and he went off in an ambulance. I digress, is my clutch needing replaced because i reckon that 2.7 engine should be able to drag anything, least of all a 800kg caravan.:nenau

What do you think.

i'd start with the cheap stuff first, replace fuel filter as lack of fuel can cause lack of power

This was done on the last service and not that long ago. The garage i got it from had a load of invoices for all the work they had done on it for the previous owner. He took it to same place all the time for servicing and MOT etc.

I had an escort many moons ago that required a new clutch for the very same reason and it all feels quite similar. Going up hill, a bit more load and the engine reving out before returning to normal when the load eases.

OK clutch test, select 5th gear HB fully on foot on clutch peddle, floor the accelerator peddle, slide foot off clutch, engine must stall within 3 to 4 seconds if it still revs clutch naff, Rick

im with Rick, do the clutch test, its very likely your clutch is on its way. how many miles on the truck?

I'll do the clutch test when i get home today.
Truck has done just over 72,000 miles.

Probably original clutch, mine is still original, but it depends on what it has been used for.

The test sounds scary to me.

Yes,the terrano will pull the van no problem,as for slipping clutch,it depends on how its been treated in the past, normally what happens is that one moment you have a clutch next moment you have no drive at all,it usually it takes the clutch centre out, no noise or anything, but do the test h/brake on etc, there may be a smell of burning.cgth of the changing clutch is possible to do on the driveway, but it's bl**dy heavy, it's nearly the length of the swb.

It is a standard test across the board from smallest to biggest, it can get a bit scary with a big 250 HP truck but sound if you remember to heel and toe with the foot brake full on, at the end of the day the clutch has to be able to take all the engine can give, Rick
