Side exit exhaust.

Some time ago I started on this and now as the Black Pearl rises from the past I'm finishing it orff :thumb2
This is all 65mm stainless pipe :sly
As part of my chase for more power, I started right at the turbo. That's where the stock exhaust is at it's worst. It's a nasty cast 90 degree restrictive bend, right on the arse of the turbo :doh
Here's the new turbo out collector elbow thing I had made locally. The idea is to get as little back pressure on the turbo as possible.

About as big as practical

Here's the whole down pipe and a stainless flexi on the end. This lot easily goes up from underneath and onto the back of the turbo.

This is how it appears under the crossmember. Pipe's ready squished for the next section.

A simple straight bit then past the transfer box to another small flexi just so I don't get stress in the pipe or droaning in the truck (I hope)

That lot then goes through the side of the truck :clap
I can't find the welding shots now but there's a tunnel through the side of the truck just in front of the rear wheel. This mod by the way will only really work with a body lift ( ha ha yes I should have mentioned it earlier :lol ) It's also critical position wise as there's only just enough room over the chassis as the floor turns up.
It's the bit bottom left here.

Then it comes out the side this, pre trim

Trimmed back and just about central

It's all in but not welded just now as I forgot to get stainless gas

Great work Pete:thumbs:thumbs going to fit a side exit on my LWB mainly for when we get a caravan so the front of the van doesn't get covered in soot:doh but going to have the exit just behind where the rear mudflaps are & under the bumper, coming out of the bumper would look good but if at some stage I do body lift it I would then be left with either a hole in the bumper or an exhaust that went up hill which would fill up with water:doh

I certainly like the look of this, whats the difference compared to mine that stops at the gearbox? I have this nasty restrictive bend I guess? :nenau

I am certainly interested as I love the whistle of my turbo already :naughty

That's if there is anything to be gained from my already noisier exhaust :nenau

Edit - I wouldn't have the side exit, just the bigger bore and still stop at g'box with a kink to face out to nearside.

What size pipe is yours ? On mine it's all part of the overall power hunt and plan. The elbow on it's own will have little benefit.
There's a lot of work making the elbow off the turbo and not one I did.
Another advantage of mine is the noise is sent off out behind me , just like a jet fighter :lol

In the pipeline (no pun intended) I am planning to get a remap, would I benefit from this exhaust mod too?

It comes down to bang for bucks I guess. About 150 quid to get that turbo pipe done in stainless .:augie

You got templates for em? I would still want mine to finish by the gearbox too.

With the truck mate. It's not a measurement kind of job. Look up custom exhaust manufacturers in your area , there must be loads in the smoke

I'll be looking at around £250-300 for a full custom s/s exhaust:augie The Son has just had one made up from manifold back, got to say his Hyundai Coupe has a great burble on tickover & it's loud outside of the car but not when your in it

Seems about right :thumb2 I got my bends and stuff off ebay for not a lot of quids. Kept the bits I wanted and sold the rest on again :sly
That's another reason I didn't want just a cut off pipe under my seat area Keep the cabin usable for my new sound system

TBH the only part that might go over the next year or so will be the front pipe as the centre & tail pipes have been replaced not that long before I got it with dealer parts (Nissan stamped on them) might chop out the only box there is in the system tho:augie

even i could tell ya that, lol factory dump pipe is so restrictive,

I still prefer the lake pipe look with the 3 inch out in font of the rear wheel.

A good day on the Black Pearl today :thumb2
Got the zorst welded up and properly fitted.

The tricky area where it comes up over the chassis turned out to be a simple cup of coffee think it out job. Used an exhaust clamp and welded that to the chassis. That way the pipe is still removable :thumb2

Trouble was the chassis was a little cheese like just there :doh Hey ho, cut out and weld in

In place and clamped, all tidy like

Face plate to make at some point , THEN it'll be done :lol

Little update time. I found a bit of stainless plate in the garage just about big enough to make the face plate with :thumb2
I used an offcut of the exhaust as a template and found a saucer just the right size to cover the flat stainless I had.

The trouble with stainless is it's a bit hard for hole saws so I had a chew on it anyway :lol

Some time later after some filing I eventually got the plate to fit over the pipe snugly

Popped it over my zorst and drew a line with a felt pen. That's the black you can see and not a gap :sly

This section is now at the TIG man for some welding :naughty
Just need to decide how to finish off my end now :splif
