That is not good. So now your only options are either a replacement head or an engine swap?

The engine shop I took mentioned a couple of times that they had never seen a glow plug in which the ceramic runs all the way through. Bit of a crap design if you ask me. Otherwise drilling out would have been much easier.

If you ever decide to go for a new AMC head then send an email to AMC themselves. They forward the query to a supplier in the UK. There are several other companies out there that use the AMC part number but don’t supply the AMC head.

Please don’t see this as me trying to push you to an AMC head! We all have our own ideas and what works for one might not work for the other. I only try to give you as accurate information as I can and follow your progress with interest. Oh, and sometimes I like to play devils advocate. :whip:

I hope you find something suitable so you can have her on the road soon. :thumb2:thumb2

Thank you kindly Mr Wrench

I hope to see it on the road too at some point :(

Now we're talking!!!! Would you do that for me......

I love this forum and all on it with all my heart :)

I'm sure we can probably sort something naughty with the shipping, I'll send a plane [emoji38]

OK, i sent some messages... let's see if something will surface!!! (with all the glow plugs removed!!!) :lol

Purely out of interest Zac, how much would you pay for a second hand head from Portugal bought unseen?

This is a good question.
I really don't know about the shipping costs.

Prices, the ones i found (for now) are around 250€ (£215).
So, that plus shipping and eventually some taxes...

Let's see what will come up.

I paid £60 + VAT for shipping from Spain for my cylinder head. So I wouldn’t expect too much difference from Portugal.

Anything over £135 attracts 20% VAT and 2.5% customs duty. For ease of calculation multiply the sales price + shipping by 1.225.

On top of all this the courier will charge a handling fee. For DHL this is 2.5% of the VAT/Duty pay with a minimum of £11.

Depending on who ships it you may be able to declare them as a lesser value but of course I am not encouraging you to break the law. :D

Based on your price of £215 + £60 (shipping) x 1.225 = £336.87 + £11 (handling charge) = £347.87.

Thanks for the tip!!

As my TD27 is still running i now nothing about these problems...

Long may your 2.7 continue! :thumb2

The head you are looking for is for a RD28 with Turbo and intercooler, hence the RD28Ti. The normal RD28T has hydraulic lifters whilst the RD28Ti uses shims. The RD28Ti also has slightly different pistons.

Even a lot of the parts providers in the UK are unaware of the difference. In all fairness, neither was I until the piston rings I ordered didn’t fit. Turned out that they were for a RD28T but not a RD28Ti. :doh

Broadly speaking the RD28T is used in the Y60 and the RD28Ti in the Y61.

I think you still pay VAT on value under £135. The £135 rule applies to Import duty and generally how you pay the VAT (At sale or at delivery)

Yes, as always you pay VAT on orders under £135. However if the price is below £135 then the seller collects it whilst above £135 the courier collects it.

That price for a new head FT is a bargain once you take all the machining and casting into consideration I would not want to make one for that price even if I had all the latest machinery to do it, Rick

It is not too bad Rick, but do remember that it is a bare head that misses at least the following items: pre combustion chambers, valve seats, valve guide seals, valves, valve springs and probably a couple of more items.

Whilst the fully build head is £694 ex VAT and you only need to swap over your camshaft.

They offer various stages of build up heads, from completely bare to fully build including camshaft. So it really depends on how much of your old head you want to transfer.

Update: now i understand why it's so hard to find one. they usually overheat and cabuuum... :nenau

The recomendations i got from fellow Patrol GR owners is to buy a new one.
One of them bought one bare head from AutoDoc for 555€ (including taxes), they have variable discounts.

RD28T i found several, but RD28Ti not so much.

Example:
https://recife.com.pt/pt/ProductDet...n-patrol-iii-2-hardtop-k260-84-98-6-cilindros

I will keep looking.

AutoDoc has several different guises and they sell a lot of Patrol parts. Even though their website is AutoDoc.co.uk they are based in Berlin, Germany. If buying from them be aware of VAT and import duty.

I nearly got stung by this as I assumed that they were based in the UK. :doh

Still nothing i can recommend.

I had some offers for a head to your RD28Ti but nothing i can trust.
High mileage and lots of tuning on them (Big turbos).

I will keep looking.

Sorry to hear Zac. :(. It doesn’t sound very likely that she will grace our streets anytime soon.
