Access for a drill square on is impossible mate, you'd need an oversized drill bit to start with

I've just watched petes vid. Not sure how he drilled out the thread of the old plug without damaging the thread inside the cylinder head :nenau
No mention of helicoils......

I got a set of extra length drill bits from B&Q.
About twice the length as a standard bit.
Would they get in to drill it out???

What's the length on them mate? I'd need to check and take some measurements.

I've got to upload my welding attempt last night, I wasn't successful, but I'm no worse off and haven't damaged the spare head so all is good, still 2 snapped plugs in the block though

I'm going to re-attempt tonight as I had a solid solid purchase and it took the same amount of force as it did the first time to snap the weld off the plug again but after a few attempts I succeeded in only ripping more of the core out

Did a bit of a clean around the area I was going to be welding

Welded onto the plug using an M10 nut positioned perfectly and filled it to the brim!!!

Pulled the core out some more!!!

Right, had another go at the welding technique tonight, tried twice, still no damage to the head, but still not managed to extract anymore out than I have already got.

I cleaned the area up again and got rid of all the swarf with a magnet and then gave up with that idea.

I think drilling it is going to be my only option by the looks of it.

I've done some measuring and to get my drill head into a position where I'm going to be able to drill straight I'm going to need 75mm, not including however much I will need for the chuck in the drill and not even sure how deep I need to drill into the plug :nenau

I've measured the diameter of the glow plug chamber with my verniers and I get 8mm in a good chamber, if I measure the diameter inside the core of the plug I get just under 5mm, so should I be drilling for about 7.5mm and hoping the remainder will just collapse?

Or is it time to use an easy out kit etc?

Can only buy them in a pack of 10 though for around £18.

Zac think you are on an uphill struggle to try and drill out a glowplug the problem is that as you get closer to the seat the metal becomes undrillable as in it is stuff designed to get red hot all its life, to stand a chance of drilling out you need a left hand drill very near to the thread size and hope that as you get near the seat the reduced grab of the thread due to the reduced metal thickness will allow the rest of the plug to unscrew as you are drilling, this all assumes you are drilling dead center in in the first place, I would trust the job to a machine shop that has the equipment to do the job, Rick

Nice one mate, after watching the excellent work of that guy in the Diesel Pumps UK video, I think I'm going to give the slide hammer trick a go as that was awesome!!!!!

It seems that he was able to tap to M8 so I presume the plug chambers are wider on the OM606, I might have to go M6 hardened, now where do I go about getting a slide hammer like that chappies!!! :nenau

Update

Things have been slow and quiet on the Patrol front. Not having much success in removing the 2 damaged glow plugs from the spare head that I have on the bench at the moment has really knocked my mojo!

I really really like the method that the guy from Diesel Pumps UK uses and as such I'm going to go that route I reckon :thumb2

As such, I've ordered myself a 156mm 5.0mm HSS drill bit;

Stirring the pot

Progress has been slow with this one, painfully slow.

I'd have hoped to have had the engine dropped in by now and be using it as my daily until the MOT expires in October, no chance of making that now :doh

As per my last post I managed to drill and tap the snapped plug as far in as the seat which is what Rick said. I used my new Sealey ratchet tap and tapped the hole out to M7, I've wound an M7 bolt in with plenty thread and it feels solid :thumb2

Next step is slide hammer time.....

I decided to just go for something middle of the road as there was lots of choice, I didn't want to get a stupidly expensive one as it will be used so infrequently, but didn't want to buy a £8.99 Hong Kong special that wouldn't be man enough for the job.

The next problem that I have is the fact that the slide hammer has an M16 1.5 thread, how can I make something that will then allow me to attach to the M16 thread and then step down to M7 without ruining the tool :nenau

Any thoughts?

How about a piece of round stock tapped each end to what size you need?

Or weld a m16 nut to the m7 bolt you already have.

Front Crossmember

Good graft on the Patrol yesterday with Uncle Elts. We did a deal on a load of parts in return for his welding skills on the front crossmember of the Patrol.

I've been really anxious about it and after seeing other repair threads on the forum I was worried mine was going be a bugger to fix. It certainly looked nice and crusty but was surprisingly strong when he went at it with the hammer and beefy chisel :bow

The engine will be getting some attention this week.

My boss at work now has the measurements he needs to be able to turn me up the adaptor for my slide hammer. Once he's done that I'll be attempting a removal of one of the plugs I've managed to tap on the spare head I have on the bench at the moment.

If we are successful with that, then that's how I'll be tackling my new engine, if it doesn't then I'll be going down the route of trying to fabricate a puller instead
