I flushed my terrano lump with a hose pipe on the small pipes to the heater on the rear.
Had it on the stand and turned it over a few times to make sure i got as many orifices as possible.

Thanks Elts, seems some people have gone to the extremes of buying additives and using distilled water etc. I don't know if that's needed though :nenau

I've been a busy boy anyways, I've been stripping away at that scrap engine since I've got back from Croatia this afternoon. It's pretty much a bare engine now comprising of cylinder head and bottom end :naughty

Pics to follow later

Loving the welders wrench on the battery :lol

I live on the wild side :lol :lol

Nice to see you back, some one told a friend of a friend who told a lad down the chippy that you'd brought a Land Rover

I'd be interested to see pictures of the cylinder head to see what kind of condition that was in as they are meant to be the weak part being aluminium.

What miles has the truck done again?

I'm in trouble with the cylinder head!!!!! Looks like whatever plugs were in the scrap engine had been in there from the factory, I was able to remove 4 plugs, 2 of which came out with ends, 2 of which had NOTHING left of the ceramic tip :doh

The other 2................... yep you guessed it, snapped off in the cylinder head :doh :doh

Head will be coming off and I'll be doing a write up of the extraction process

The forum has been dead lately,I can only hope that means everyone has been busy with the spanners but can't see much evidence of that!!!

Anyways, I've been busy as per usual

I've been cleaning the the new engine up for the Patrol and started to paint it with VHT paints and it's not looking too shabby at all

So here she is dirty!!!

Contrasting colour in the engine bay and leds:naughty
This could be a show truck:lol

In the garage currently and just been testing the thermostat out with the pan test.

Service manual said 82 degrees and the thermostat itself was stamped 82 degrees.

Measured water temp while it was on a stove with 2 thermometers for an accurate reading and it didn't open until 91 degrees :nenau

I presume I should be swapping that?

For what a thermostat costs if you’ve already removed old one then it makes sense to get it replaced now then you know that it is a good un :thumbs

Well it all went a bit belly up towards the end of the day yesterday

I was removing the glow plugs from the new engine and despite my best efforts to be really careful, I have managed to snap a plug off for Cylinder 3 :(

I'm not removing the head on this engine, if it comes to that then I'll just break the whole thing.

Luckily the body of these plugs seems to be all metal unlike the plugs in the head of the other cylinder head that have snapped too :doh I've removed the fuel rail and removed the injector to give me better space and intend on trying to weld a nut onto the plug and wind it out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated to save me making a very costly mistake :nenau :doh

Been doing a whole lot of reading and not much work this morning.

Seems I can't find many people at all online that agree with the weld out option :doh

I have 2 broken off plugs in my spare head as well that came off the scrap engine. I'm in a position as well whereby I can get the scrap engine head on a bench and may use this one to "practice" with.

If I make a pigs ear of that one then I'll try and get my new one rescued by a professional :(

I'm so gutted as I was so so careful knowing how weak these can become.

Another option is to drill it out and fit a helicoil thread.

I'd practice on the old one. Good idea pal, assuming the plugs are the same :thumb2

I had to do my merc recently. This youtube clip is relevant to mine but the principle will work on yours I guess.Just check on sizes with your dead gps and trial run on your old head :)

Thanks Pete!!!! Can't watch it at work with sound, I thought I had the jist of it and then he started drilling half way through but I don't know why!!! It looked like he'd been able to successfully extract what was left of the remaining plug in the head with the welding method, but then he drilled the hole!!!!

I thought he was home and dry, I need to re-watch with sound when I'm home but seeing him wind that plug out with a nut was very very reassuring after not really finding many people who approve of the method online.

I've purchased stuff from Diesel Pumps UK before so trust their experience, they also pointed me in the direction of Ribble Valley Diesel for a head seal for a VE pump before :thumb2

I'll have a good watch later and take note!!!

I did mine in situ mate. Balls of steel are the only tools you need :lol

The plugs in the other head seemed to have a white outer weirdly which I'm hoping was just a cover.

Looking at a cross section diagram of a glow plug, they seem pretty hollow inside, hopefully I'll be able to pull the remaining inner core out and the weld will fill the rest of the inside of the plug with hot weld that I'm hoping will free the plug!!!

Just hoping I get enough purchase on it and weld that it just winds out :bow

At least I have a spare head to play on
