A little info for you all, There has been a rubber shortage for around 5 /6 yrs as I did a stint on Michelin at Stoke and can confirm a few things, Firstly, Michelin have 2 depots that are constantly supplying ATS (Michelin owns ATS) Stoke and Basildon, and also they own Kleber and BFG, they bring tyres in to stoke from Slovenia and Slovakia and Czech mainly via east european transports firms, Now Stoke is just a warehousing facility employing around 500 people, in the 80s they had a manufacturing plant there and employed around 26000 people. Uk border control are constantly looking at the Michelin as its so easy to hide in the middle of the tractor tyres. BFG 4X4 tyres come in the same way via eastern europe as its a fix for taxation laws US TO UK My opinion is that roll on the revolution so we can be rid of the EU and the foreigners and maybe life will be so much more pleasent, but somehow I am grabbing for the pipe and dreaming me thinks :lol :lol :lol Oh and I would never buy a tyre from ATS as the mark up is at least twice as much as your local tyre dealer

I reckon "Re-Tread's" that are only made for trucks will soon be made for cars :nenau

ReTreads have ben around for cars for almost as long as rubber tyres have been available.

Anyway time to fess up I think its my fault, all the tyres are in my back garden, I keep selling some but the pile never seems to get any smaller :D:D:D

Question???? cannot old tyres be re cycled into new tyres or is this not possible, we seem to have big problems getting rid of old tyres, here we can only take 4 per month to the tip and after banger racing I have over 100 to get rid of,:nenau:nenau:nenau Rick

as far as i know they can't, maybe that is the way forward finding a recyclable material for amking tyres, dragons den here we come!

there is a cmpany close to me that makes rubber chippings for play areas, horse excersise yards etc from old tyres, they take the sttel out some how and chip the rest. Better than landfill i suppose.

Don't know much about retreads but I won't go near remoulds:eek:

Jim

modern remoulds are, or rather were, very good, but colway went under and kingpin don't seem to have much of a range or many sizes in stock. I have no problem with remoulds. Apparently there big problem is getting enough suitable old tyres, it's the new tyres that aren't up to scratch for the job, and competition from cheap imported brands from china and pacific rim countries.

Oh yeah I've seen trucks with them on. There used to be speed restrictions didn't there? I also understand that any tyre can go bang whether it's brand new or remould.

Does anyone know if the claims about fuel saving tyres are true? the Scenic 15DCI that we have came as standard with Mich Energy Savers and we've kept on having those fitted when needed simply to keep them all the same. The car is very economic I have to say which I think is more down to the engine and fuel system. That's about as good as it get's really as we both prefer to drive the T2.

Jim

Same thing, many of the wagon on the road are running on retreaded/remoulded tyres. Nothing wrong with them IMHO

Correct mate

All lorry's only have original new tyres from new then they have re-tread where they glue the tread on after shaving the remainder of the old off. These tyres are how ever only used on the rear wheels & trailers. Then re-moulds on the front.
That's why when you see lorry's with blow outs, its always on the rear.
Hence why you only see the tyre tread debris on the road, its where its got hot & come unstuck.

The only retread I have experience of was a 10.00 X 20 truck tyre fitted to my semi trailer (32 ton) in Birmingham late on a Friday night got as far as Scrachwood services M1 before it disintegrated, firm I worked for would only fit new tyres but the call out firm in Brm scammed them rotten, and in over 500,000 miles on that firm it was only the second flat I ever had, Rick
