Good morning chaps,

Can anyone advise me on the sizes of the terrano roof i need to know if the shape changes from early to late LWB models? :nenau:nenau:nenau

The reason I ask is because I am planning to fit some roof rails to the car that rick has on one of his terranos down there, only difference is the age, before we drill into my roof i'd like to be sure that i wont be left with some big holes in the roof!!

As always there is method in my madness, once the rails are on I have a roof rack that will be fabricated hopefully to fit, and also my new LED light bar can bolt on too, then the spots can sit on there for the rear as well!

There will also be a tent too with a ladder :naughty :augie

Important bit is the rail sizes as ricks rails are off an old terrano 1999 era I beleive :nenau

as far as I am aware the roof is the same.
back door, front wings, grill, headlights and indicators where changed on the mk III.

There is nothing to test fit against, there are no holes on my roof at the moment.

:doh you don't need the holes bud - just take them off Rick's motor and hold them on your roof where you want them to go to see if they'll fit...

There was a good write up on retrofitting roof bars on the LWB T2... somewhere...:augie

I would expect that the roof for all LWB's are the same, also with or without sunroof.

I would make a cardboard template of the holes in the roof from the donor vehicle, and a forward to back reference point, maybe the rear roof part when the door is open.

Remember.... measure twice... drill once.
Personally, I would measure six times, mark the template holes on to the roof, and check another half a dozen times, and only then drill a small hole having removed the inner roof liner to see where the hole is...
Not for the feint hearted.

I had my heart in my mouth whenever I drilled holes in my boat's grp hull, having fitted a balanced flue for heating, and water tank over flow pipes...
I always start with a small drill, then you can reposition the next small drill hole if required before increasing the drill size.:thumb2

To be fair, every task I did was right first time, but that was due to accurate planning, and not the bull at a gate approach of let's see where this hole comes out...
If you fail to plan.... you plan to fail...:thumb2

An alternative would be to fit an external roll cage, like some LR's
Some scaffolding poles... sorted.:augie
Some Hammerite... excellent...:augie

:clap :bow Yes just place them in the general area and you will soon see if they will fit.

This could be interesting as I understood that they couldn't be retrofitted as the non-roofbar roof didn't had the same level of support as the factory fitted roofbar roof. Good news if they can as I'll be looking at a roof tent at some point in the future too and I'd prefer to have the ladder and awning over the tailgate.

I bought a pair from CNC for my 05 plate, I dry fitted and they were fine just never got round to buying some riv nuts and fitting.

So to that end if anyone wants a set of roof rails drop me a PM with an offer.

Alex there are 3 4.2 patrols in total off road 1 auto 1 manual 1 not defined the manual is only a couple of grand

Kind regards

Russell

yes they can with the right rivnuts they locate on the roof support bars and fit to them with spacers between the bars and the roof, Rick

sure are same fit through years

bought some for our old mk2, then traded for y61 before getting to fit them.

sold them to a member in Greece with i'm sure a mk4 was very happy with
them, fitted.

Brill, thanks all for the info, I guess in the longrun I have to be sure this will work as I plan to have a tent on the roof, it must take my weight, and the other half too :thumb2

There is a limit to the weight the roof bars will take, it is screen printed on the side, around 75KG I think.

If you exceed the weight and for any reason the roof bars dump the contents on the road the boys in blue will have a field day and there is a good possibility your insurance company will refuse any payout.

I got mine from CNC and used rivnuts, simple job just measure lots drill once, well as I recall 12, 2 bolts per leg :)

I am hoping that the 75kg limit wont be reached as the weight will be spread over the whole body, there will be a cage on top and a tent on top of that.

Any advise anyone on weight? I'm sure there was a t2 tent picture a while back?

Just had a look at mine. 55kg max!
You'll be better off getting the whole roof rack fabricated and bolt it straight on, not bothering with roof bars. uploadfromtaptalk1426094238354.jpg

pretty sure that is 55kg per rail, as 55kg overall is pants, Rick

A roof tent isn't going to weigh much more than 50-60kg anyway, so no problems.
