I'm going to be carrying long things on the roof of my terrano LWB. Its got roof rails, but they stop a bit short of the front of the roof.
I'll be fitting a rack for a terrano/maverick with no roof rails as far forward as possible on the roof.
These come in pairs, so I will have one left.
If anyone else wants to support long things on their roof as well as possible then we can go halves maybe?
Perhaps someone already has a spare one of two?

My long things are hang gliders by the way.
Myself and my wife are members of the British Hang Gliding Team.

sounds like you need one of these ;)

I guess that's an option. But I like the idea of putting the load onto another bit of the roof as well as the roof rails.

Mine will be the one half way up a mountain on its side due to overloading the roof ;)

I tried hang gliding once, but the rope hurt my neck...:lol:lol:lol

Hi dave.
I had a newer terrano a while back, one of the last 2.7 ones.
Unfortunately i had a no fault collision and afterwards lots of trouble with the diff caused by the idiots who fixed it not filling it with oil. Anyway a year after the fix the back diff exploded in Laragne and after it was fixed by nissan in Gap (a long story but in the end all expenses were covered) i sort of never trusted it and got rid. That was when the snowy winters started :)
Anyway i had the extra rack like that and it worked well. Loads of gliders all the way to croatia. Doubt ill go further than wales in this one.

I thought about bull bars, but this car is supposed to be done on a minimum cost basis.

Belt and braces

watch your loading, I think my rails say max 90KG, its OK until it goes pear shaped and your insurance company wriggles out. That will be after the police hit you with unsecure load :doh

Get a glider rider if you don't have bull bars, under heavy braking you will put quite a stress load on the rear rail mounting. Play safe strap the glider/s down to your rear bumper and load up tail first.

The std rails say 75kg on a sticker i must remember to peel off..
On the road ill normally only have three gliders max but my other terrano coped with 4 no probs.
Off road insurance wont pay out for a disaster anyway im sure. If i did roll the gliders would be many times the value of the car...
We just go up some farm tracks that are a bit too rough for a normal car. Ill post some pics next time, prob not until next spring.
Id like to have a go at cross fell, lovey llace to fly. Not been up that track (a private one negotiated with the farmer i think) for about 15 years. The pandas were getting up ok then.
We take it very carefully brecause of our fragile roof load!

Funnily enough i was pulled over by the police once because a memeber of the public had reported me as having an unsafe roof load on my zafira. A bed from ikea. They looked at how it was tied on and gave me the ok to proceed. The french cops stopped me with the gliders this summer. But we just explained they were all carbon fibre and very light. We had all the legal reflectors and overhangs were within legal limits.it was worthn stopping just because the two french policewomen were really pretty!
