Ok, so mate is a welder and has a workshop with a tube bending mandrel etc, says he'll make me some and might be able to get some steel, but where can i pick up some cheap steel like 50x50 box section ?

Try your local steel stockholders, ebay sometimes has some on last time i got some 50x50 angel it was 20 quid a length from a local steel suplies
cheers Andy

often farmers supply shops have various sizes in stock, I have also found most big stockholders will do you a cash deal :thumbs

Here's a link to my local farmers shop for a few ideas :thumb2

Where?

local blacksmiths usually have stuff, surely your mate knows where to get some at good prices?

50 x 50  go bigger man  or at least a good wall thickness. Also make sure that you/he pay particular attention to the mounting bracket strength and position :thumbs
Roll cage you say :naughty now you've got me interested :sly tell me more:cool:
I did a thread on rock sliders too :clap

Ok, got all my stuff for these sliders. Got some 8mm steel plate to bolt to chassis, got my 50x50x3mm all cut to length. So I've never welded anything before but I'm just gonna go for it :D

Had a practice on some scrap, going to use 2.5 mm rods at 140 amp, will set a small 1mm gap on joints with my magnetic clamps.

Should be a nice learning project as its not critical/structural

that size box section with that wall thickness wont offer much protection, also it might warp when you weld it to the thicker plate

Wrong

3mm is what most use, do a google search

Oh and it didn't warp lol

Would put more support in 1st rock to hit that will bend it.If youre going to do roll cage should be pipe not box section will be harder to make but will look much better and a lot stronger.

Anyway, that was fun :)

Took a few goes to get my settings dialed in :D but got there in the end. Not pretty at all, arc is crude I think, but got good penetration.

Did a root weld, then tryed to build it up either side, like I say not pretty but strong, cost me £25 so not too bothered, well see if they hold up

Welds looked ok after I cleaned them up with grinder, will red oxide tommoz then hammerrite at some point and got some 50mm plastic cabs to cover ends

Going to add gussets to top, also most I've seen on net have only 2 outriggers/legs

Oh, need 100mm x m12 bolts too as the 80mm ones I got off my mate are too short ffs

Might do away with the bottom bolt and weld a plate in so it's flush, but the gear box cross member sits lower than the brackets protrude, so will se how that goes too

I would clean your welds up get the slag out of the blow holes and then turn the welder up an go over them again dont look too bad as said practice makes perfect
Try going a bit faster when the welder is turned up also try my tip of holding the end of the rod and moving this rather than just moving the rod holder i find i get more controled movement ps wear gloves

Ok mate, cheers for that, still got to weld the bar on the n/s one ( on way to Blackpool at min on iPhone :D ) so I'll grind them back a bit and hit them hard again.
