Has anyone ever heard of a 2.7 dying due to ring gumming?

I've been a member on vegetableoildiesel.com for a while now and hear lots of horror stories on there about vehicles packing in due to ring gumming, the most recent case being a 2.5 Diesel Transit

Thats because ring gumming is more of a problem on di engines when warming up and burning veg on idi its alot less of a problem:thumbs

Many thanks for that post, I've just done a lot of research since reading this and now understand why ring gumming is a lot less prevalent on an IDI :thumb2, I now also understand why the 2.7 is so thirsty!!!!!

Do tell us all then

It's to do with the way DI and IDI's are built, IDI's make use of a precombustion chamber which apparently decreases the amount of time the oil spends in the combustion chamber, ring gumming builds when engines are cold.

DI's use a slow air fast fuel flow mixture whereas IDI's use fast air slow fuel mixture

The reason that they are such thirsty engines is because of the heat loss and pressure loss due to the fact that they use a fast air mixture.

Also starting an IDI without glow plugs is almost impossible however DI's do not need glow plugs to start as was proven with the 2.4 Transit

indirect injection vastly reduces diesel knock, but also lowers efficiency, simples, Rick

Ring Gumming

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm call me old fashioned but it is a diesel engine designed to run on diesel not oil designed for the kitchen.

I have seen quite a few newish model Mercedes cars that have had engines & fuel systems ruined by mixing in fuel that is not diesel.

Anyway I need to pay the fuel VAT and fuel duty to keep our House of Commons & Lords in the manner to which they have been accustomed. Also to pay for the jails where the expenses fiddlers are sent. LOL

The first diesel engine was designed to run on coal dust then peanut oil I believe, the older diesel engines can almost run on any oil but as u have just pointed out that new ish I.e 2000 onwards ( common rail diesels) can only run on diesel as the tolerance s in side the ip r so much smaller hope that helps abit

People attempting to run Oil in Common Rail engines is just suicide!!!

Come on lad, there's no need to be scared, just chuck some in and when you start to see the savings you'll understand :thumbs

yes mr diesiel made it to run on peanut oil as it was in abundance and cheap, never herd of coal dust.
legal side is upto 2500ltrs duty free but 1ltr over and you need to pay the duty on the lot.
