Hi All

My aerial is caput. The plastic housing seems to have disintegrated so i have to replace the entire unit. The local motor factors will sell a universal unit but said I should check first that the original aerial doesnt have an in built amplifier.

Anyone done this job before and is there an amp in the aerial??? Also how do you remove the felt ceiling covering in the car to access the aerial wires?

Thanks in anticipation.

Lee

if you remove the rear door seal you should have enough space to get at the base of the ariel on the inside of the roof.as for the built in amp:nenauno idea

Hi Zippy, well how is this for a coincidence. I have just come in from working on the terrano
switched on the computer to ask the same question!!!!! I have posted that my new radio would pick up fm but med and long wave was useless and it was suggested that I look at the aerial. Well I have found that if I put a piece of wire directly into the radio the noise disappears and the all three wavebands are ok. because the aerial is on the roof I thought I might put another one else where. I just googled and found a amplified aerial on ebay so I have come on the 4x4 to ask how to do it and there you are asking the same question.

Has I am well-known as a gentleman I will let you go first, I live by my avatar ( a wise man learns by others mistakes) i wait to hear from you Mr Zip, regards bri

Thanks for the replies. I will have a go at the weekend to see if it can be rectified.

Have just pulled off rear door seal (great these light nights) no holes there, there is a panel which the rear door light fits. Will see if it comes off tomorrow.....bri

Hi Zippy & Wild Bri

I had no aerial when I bought my T2, so I just bought a cheap replacement from the local motor shop, screwed it in to the existing mount and it works just fine. I don't know if an amplified type would work better but then I don't listen to the radio a lot (French radio is less than entertaining to me!).

If I want audio I use my ipod with an itrip attached and charged from the cig lighter socket, to play through the radio amp and speakers. That works just fine and I can have the audio I prefer.

Regards CL

Snapped mine off yesterday while laning its an electric jobbie on the wing and cant see any way of getting to it so going to try and fit a flexy one on the roof.
Mines a d22 and ive had the headlining down before so it shouldn't be too hard. Anybody know if a whip type (cb/ham) aerial is any good for radio:nenau

I had a springy whippy aerial on my last mav. Got it from motor world halfords about 10 squid:thumbs
Mine was on the wing and worked a treat AND no probs off road as it just bends out the way:D

Wildbri have you tried sticking a coathanger in the aerial socket on the roof, just to make sure it isn't the connecting cable thats given up the ghost?

Hi there

The aerial mast has disintegrated and the base is letting in water. I need to replace the entire unit. Seen a company on ebay selling nissan ones for 17.95 all in.

Will try to fit it and let you all know.

Yep I did stick a coat hanger, well part of one in the aerial base, no joy but the same bit of wire stuck in the back of the radio worked perfectly, all three wavebands and little noise... so looks like a new one. but how do I get in the roof? regards bri

well that implies its the cable not the aerial itself, so you need to get inside the rooflining and trace it out and replace it....probably removing door seals at the top but I'll let someone who's done it have their say! Or you could just run a new coax under the carpets to the rear and up to the aerial under the rim?

thank you, I may well just stick one on the wing.. good night bri

As I am gentleman of leisure and today was nice and sunny (yes we do have the odd sunny day here in Lakeland) I have had a go at the aerial . just to confirm Mr Zip the aerial in my terrano does have an amplified mast as seen on ebay.

to remove or investigate. open back door, pull down top of grey door seal, climb inside and sit with feet pointing to the rear something comfy to lean back on helps. on either side of light panel there are two pads to pull off. Remove screws and pull of panel with light, pull off wires, If yours has the amplified aerial you will see a wire coming off the lighting loom. I pulled down the roof lining just enough to look inside (torch need) put in two small blocks to hold it down so I could slide in a spanner. At this stage I had the radio tuned to the longwave. When
I pulled off the amp wire the "noise" reduced but as I slackened the nut the long wave came on loud and clear! tightened nut and problem came back. So I have put it all back
and have ordered a new one from ebay, the one you have seen Mr Zippy. Hope this was helpful and will report back when I have fitted the replacment

Hi Bri

I had a look today to see if i could replace it myself. My cable is not a problem - the aerial works - it just lets in water and is unsightly.

You can access the aerial by removing the ceiling felt stuff at the back - remove the 2 screws on the plastic trim at the door frame and pop the clips to the plastic trim that houses the rear door light. There is a stud that keeps the roof felt up. If you unclip that you will be able to pull down the ceiling felt and see the aerial base and the cables.

My new aerial came this morning and I was able to fit it after lunch. Now every thing is loud and clear, longwave, medium and FM, but (theres always a but) although the aerial was advertised for all nissans including terranos the cable ends were different, so I had to remove the fittings from the old one and solder them to the new. regards bri
