How's yours been since you had it done? I remember the last time I did it on the Mitsubishi and the truck was just never quite the same again. Ended up (eventually somewhere further down the line after me) having a new engine.

I'm toying with scrapping and just spending the money on something else, but I'm having a bit of a dilemma...

Do I spend bucket loads of money fixing it and hoping nothing else goes wrong? Or do I get rid, get something else that I hope is also reliable? Or do I just not get a 4x4 (as my husband wants) and get something boring, sensible and reliable?

answers on a postcard :nenau

The Terrano has run fine since the new head. It did develop an oil leak but that was a bad seal on the rocker gasket that the garage sorted. I too had a dilemma but as the car was cheap when I bought it I decided to take the plunge. The labour figures ETC sound about right. Don't bother with a second hand head. Most garages won't fit one anyway and it will need skimming and testing prior to fitting.

Make sure the garage know what they are doing. They will be disturbing a lot of things to do the job.

Unfortunately all cars cost money. :(

Getting the head gasket sorted out I think is one of the most costly jobs on a Terrano but once done you'll have a smooth running motor again & you'll get through nearly anything the british weather can dish out ie rain or snow:D Before buying our second Terrano I did look at sensible'ish motors which would fit all our camping gear in & would tow a caravan without any probs & a Mondeo ticked the boxes but once I looked into keeping a 130TDCI or 155ST on the road I almost passed out at the costs of parts & how often they can go wrong, DMF & clutch £1000 to be done, fuel injectors £800 & they have to be programed to the ECU, injector pump £2000 & again has to be programed to the ECU. If I have a car it has to be fast but saying that I did trade in a 150mph motor for the Terrano:thumbs You could go out tomorrow & pay 10K for a new car & 8 months later the DMF could go:doh

Funny that!! My other car is a 2L 130TDCI mondeo estate. It cost buttons and has now done lots of miles. Flywheel started to break up at 100K miles pretty much as expected. Garage replaced it and clutch for £800. Apart from that 3 yrs of cost free motoring. The Terrano. Well that is a bit of a different story. Cylinder head, sump, AT cooler pipes, power steering pipe, etc. I am hoping for a smow filled winter to help to justify its existence.:D

Ouch:eek: had my last 1 for 3 years & only replaced drop links, water pump, pads, battery oh changed the glow plugs never really went wrong but friends have mondeo's & their fixing something every month. The joys of owning a motor:lol
