Having found a knowledgeable mechanic who is very familiar with Nissan 4x4's and gave me the good news that my Maverick's oil leak was caused by a kink in the dip stick pipe (being replaced today) it now appears that my clutch problems which I had blamed on poor adjustment when it was replaced in October turns out to be the gear box. He is not keen to replace it as he says it would be a waste of money and that I should carry on running the car until she gives out and than replace her! This is not what I want to do, but I have to be practical. He says that a reconditioned one could last only 6 months or so depending and a new one would be very expensive.

I tow horses so do not want to take any risks, I do about 12,000 miles per annum, she has 150k on the clock, is a 1994 reg and is quite tidy for a 'work horse'.

Opinions please ?

Personally, I'd say its only worth what a recon gearbox is going to cost you, possibly a bit less if you include the fitting. I'd be inclined to sell it and buy something a bit newer.

Thank you Zippy,

I have rung them and they are quoting just under £1000 for a reconditioned box and are giving the same advice as my mechanic!

Oh dear............

Its makes a loud whirring noise when under strain in ist,and almost always in reverse. When making this noise its very hard to get the car to move. I did not have any problems until the clutch was replaced, hence my assumption that it was in correct adjustment.

I am being told that it will get worse and then pack up with out much warning!!

Really gutted as she's been such a great servant and the thought of looking for another fills me with dread!

here is the place to look for one , cos you can see what questions they have asked then you know how good there truck is

mine is good now by the way.......

so it was totally fine before the new clutch?? well, without furthur investigation and perhaps second opinions, I would get a new one because for the cost of the new or reconditioned box plus labour, you couldnt probably buy a second hand one with good gear box etc. Me persoanlly, I LOVE getting a new car!

Just thought I would give an update! There is nothing wrong with my gearbox its the new clutch that needs adjusting! (Got a second opinion)

Grrrrrrrr!

Ooh, thats a lot cheaper then....

glad you dont have to scrap it now..

Well I am happy for the Maverick as she can carry on fine, but I bought another car on Saturday, (did not find out about my ' no problem' gear box until yesterday) so am now very cross !

you could try to take it back. might not let you. but always worth asking.

what was the new one you got?

Please don't shoot me down in flames, but I bought a Hyundai Sante Fe 2002
2.7 V6 4wd done 46000 miles............

I suppose I will have to look for a new home for my Maverick, not happy AT ALL!

well I looked at one of them too. but the boot wasnt bigenough for two violins and a cello. :clap:clap:clap

I might be missing somat but does it have an Hydraulic clutch?

If so how do you adjust it as I have fitted one clutch today and gotta do one in the mav 2moro which has drove me to drink i am afraid
