Removing Rotten 8mm Bolts from Fuel Sender Unit on Fuel Tank

Poor show to Nissan on this one, I've been fault finding all day trying to sort my fuelling issue out and really want to remove my sender unit now to take a look at it as I have a replacement one from a scrap one this morning.

However there are 6 bolts that hold a plate around the sender unit onto the tank on the scrapper this morn I just tore it off as I sheared 5 and saved 1

On my car I've had slightly better luck as I've removed 3 successfully but rounded 3 :doh space is very tight I obviously need to re attach this when it's off so what can I do?

These bolts are M5 with an 8mm AF hexagon head.

They screw into recessed threads, that do not go into the tank, thus making sure they are sealed, so no leaks.

You could attempt to drill out the old bolt and retap, M5, but this will be difficult to avoid drilling through into the tank.

So... assume you are going to drill through into the tank, and get a suitable sealant for diesel.
Most of the gasket replacement sealants will probably do.:thumb2

If all else fails, you can always go for M6

Make sure you collect any swarf from the drilling process.:nenau

Already done it, replaced for a clear inline glass filter and primer bulb, when running from a Jerry can it's pretty much OK but when I run from tank even with a new line the primer bulb deforms and is all sucked in, plus when I ran a length of clear pipe straight to the IP from the tank round the outside of the car there was stuff floating in the pipe :doh

sound advice from Rustic, but did you connect a temp fuel supply to the feed pipe first to check that out? or did you find debris in the tank? Rick

Difficult to collect the swarf, some must go into the tank. I suppose that a new tank is V expensive? From the photee did the bolts that hold the round cover on the floor shear off?

why not try putting a air line on the feed line and blow back it and on the return disconnect both ends and blow that out . then you could drop the tank out then filter whats in it out and flush the tank out it . because by the looks of the tank it seem to be quite corroded

I attached a full length of clear pipe round the outside of the car from tank to pump and could see bits floating in it!!! :O

How easy is it to drop the tank? I might take the heads off with an angle grinder then as rustic has said drill them out, the original 3 came out perfect with a good soaking of GT85

Been there.... got the "T"shirt...

When my tank leaked on the front seam, I undid the three fixing bolts on the front, and the leak got worse, as the seam opened up. tightened them again, and the leak was still worse than without touching it, so I suggest you don't remove the tank, unless the corrosion is slight.

I spent a few weeks looking for a tank that wasn't badly corrided on the front leading edge.... That was about 15 months ago. Managed to find one eventually.

There are not many good ones out there...
If you can get a new one.... they are around £400...

Managed to get on top of the nuts via the inspection hatch with my new Hilka Mole grips and twisted them out :thumb2

They didn't shear either so no drilling required and all I have to do now is source some new bolts

Now I suggest you all make your way over to my Fueling issue thread and prepare to be entertained as I'm sure none of you will have seen this before :clap
