rear diff

Had oil changed in rear diff because it was stepping out under load, NOW THE STRANGE BIT the oil was watery and now with new oil in i get a whine from offside shaft bearing ANY SUGESTIONS PLEASE. KEV.:nenau :bow

What do you mean by "watery" and not sure a shaft bearing will whine, rumble maybe but whine? Rick

Hi rick fitter bloke said it was like water not oily at all that was drained out. I say whine it is a strange noise but def not a normal rumble and it is more noticeable on lock. KEV.

then you need to check your diff breather pipe it connects to the transfer box and gear box and front diff and terminates near the brake master cyl, if your rear dif was full of water it will be stuffed, and you need to check the other interconnected boxes/diff are OK, Rick

I had no probs apart from dif seemed "locked" before oil change both boxes work fine too. Could it be that bearing is now trying to work oil in ??. KEV

not surprised it was locked, no oil = no slip, face it your diff is foofed together with your outer shaft bearings, get a complete axle from cncfabs is your best bet, Rick

Agreed, water has found its way in, all the bearings will be fkd or on their way

Axle is like £150 ish

Welcome to the knackered diff club!!!!!!

I have took a video of mine in gear on axle stands on the drive making the same noise as what your reporting, mine switches sides though which is quite strange :S depending on what gear I'm in of course.

I'll upload a video in a few mins

I've asked James to source me one when I fetched Callipers and Carriers last night :thumb2, he said it's a fairly straight forward job

so, do the early diff's that take 3 ltrs of oil lubricate the axle bearings too then? my 03 plate only takes enough to do the actual diff looking at the size of it(1.3ltrs). i would say, as a bodger that is, jack the vehicle up on the opposite side of whine to force some lube down there. it probably wont work but try it anyway, has your diff noise/grumbles gone with oil change? replaced with the whine?
